So many plays have explored the struggles of artists, yet very few have explored the life of working class artists - who don’t have family connections or trust funds to support them as they try and make a name for themselves. The navigation of Street loyalties with the need to break free and find a voice is one of the main preoccupations of The Denisovans.
As gentrification devours all that stood before it, it’s important to pay tribute to venues and communities that have always found a way to make art that matters.
An ensemble drama, Shot in the legendary 606 Club, exploring the emotional turmoil of working class artists hanging on by a thread and the irreconcilable conflict between family love and artistic ambition.
Jazz icon Nikki Yeoh plays piano virtuoso Naomi. Her son, Rikki (Rio Redwood-Sawyerr) is slipping away from her just as lothario ex lover Oscar is slipping back into (played by the UK soul legend Omar) her DMs and her life.
Tracy (Claire Martin OBE) who was side tracked from her creative side due to life, finds herself desperate to land a gig - She must pass the baptism of fire lit by Naomi's lethal brilliance on the piano.
The club's cleaner Vicky, (Victoria Latham Kelly) awakened by Naomi's exquisite artistry, arranges to re-connect with the daughter she abandoned - but is she ready for what Malinka (Rising star Sian Davis) has to say?
Meanwhile, the genial bouncer Henry (Henry Balogun) faces his own crucible - sought out and challenged by the notorious street fighting martial arts expert Elliot (played by the UKs top combat stunt perfomer Elmo Walker) Street chaos and passionate musicianship collide. vulnerable and punchy, soulful and explosive, the Denisovans is like nothing seen before.
We have been more than fortunate to have some of the best in the music industry backed up by some of the brightest up and coming talent join our project.
