I am pleased to begin this campaign on behalf of my patients and friends, Yoberly Zambrano and Andres Morochz. We are looking for sponsorships to assist with travel to the Ricky Palermo Spinal Injury Golf Tournament and Fundraiser held in Batavia, New York this coming August 3rd to August 6th, 2018.
My name is Daniel Samano, International Medical Graduate, Master of Public Health candidate at the University of Miami. I currently work in the Louis Pope Life Center that houses The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis where I serve as a Research Associate for the spinal cord injured (SCI) population.
People living with disabilities require modifications and possible assistance to live within their communities. The SCI population experiences both internal-physical challenges to adapt to external stimuli and external mobility challenges that make them dependent on others. Based on their injury level, people may require a wheelchair for transportation, and assistance with transfers, bathing, eating, and other daily activities. Living with SCI presents tremendous physical, psychological, and social challenges to re-enter and navigate their new role in the community.
In our SCI clinical research I have noticed there is a common denominator, the constant question of “what to do?” or “how to do it?” after the injury. I met Ricky Palermo, founder of the golf tournament fundraiser, who has had a spinal cord injury for the last 30 years. I strongly believe our patients would benefit from this opportunity for several reasons. First, Ricky serves as an example to follow in “finding a way” to live with SCI. Second, the opportunity to enjoy travel and other individuals with SCI gives a sense of belonging. Lastly, observing a successful grassroots fundraiser, like the Ricky Palermo Tournament, triggers ideas that will make a difference back at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. In sum, both the patients and the organization would benefit; the first will get motivated by experiencing how to continue living their life without limits, the latter will attract more attendees raising more resources to fuel continued research of SCI.
We aim to assist the tournament during the weekend of August 3rd to August 6th. In the budget we are including funds to support both participants, myself as a support person who knows how to provide assistance on daily needs and potentially a fourth person to provide further assistance. The total cost of the travel arrangements are $4,600 USD, which includes, flight tickets, accommodations, recreational activities, meals, and nursing care.

Marco y yo, somos dos personas con cuadriplejia por lesión medular planeando asistir al torneo de Golf de la Fundación de Ricky Palermo, que se llevará a cabo el próximo 4 de agosto en Batavia, NY.
Este torneo se realiza en beneficio de las investigaciones para la cura de las lesiones medulares, el cual tiene alrededor de 21 años llevándose a cabo, habiendo donado más de 1.2 millones de dólares a estas investigaciones.
Como generación de relevo, y participantes de Miami Project para la Cura de la Parálisis, nuestra intención de asistir a este evento, además de apoyar esta causa, es aprender, de la mano de Ricky, como manejar este tipo de eventos, que son sin duda alguna, un recurso importante que ha colaborado a que hoy en día, la actitud de curar la lesión medular, haya pasado de casi ninguna esperanza, hasta ahora que grandes avances, están tocando la puerta para comenzar los ensayos clínicos en humanos.
Actualmente, contamos con el apoyo del Dr. Daniel Sámano (Médico e Inestigador de Miami Project to Cure Paralysis), quien está dispuesto a acompañarnos y ayudarnos en todas nuestras necesidades, pero no contamos con los recursos necesarios para cubrir los gastos de vuelos, hospedaje accesible, transporte accesible, comidas, entre otros.
Es por eso que hoy, acudimos a ustedes para que nos ayuden a alcanzar este sueño el próximo mes, para aprender y saber darle continuidad a este tipo de proyectos, que son de gran impacto para las personas que vivimos con una lesión medular, y contribuir de alguna forma a encontrar la cura de la parálisis.
