Let's get Robin back
Sunday evening, June 20th, Robin took a trip out of state. It was her intent to go visit a friend to help her move, and return home in a few days. Unfortunately, she never made it to her friend's house. While travelling by bus, she fell and was taken to a hospital with a brain hemorrhage. We may never know if the fall caused the brain bleed or the brain bleed caused the fall, but the week that followed was agonizing for all who know and love her.
Robin underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a blood clot and stop the brain bleed. She had suffered a couple of strokes in her brain stem. She was in a coma as of Monday night, and we were not sure she would make it through the night. Fortunately she is strong and survived the first 24 hours, then the next 24. She was unconscious but would respond to stimuli. She eventually started moving her toes and opened her eyes. Her prognosis has improved rapidly, going from may not survive the night, to months in the ICU, to now perhaps only weeks in the ICU. And at this point, there is a possibility of a transport to Georgia sooner rather than later.
Robin and her husband Mark were forced into an early retirement due to various medical problems. But they have remained active in their church and community as a whole. As a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, an aunt, a grandmother, and a friend, Robin touched many lives. And we will be eternally grateful for the outpouring of calls, prayers, and emotional support that we have been shown by family and friends.
While we are thrilled that Robin has been beating the odds and exceeding medical expectations, we understand that the road to her recovery will be long and arduous. We also all know how expensive medical care is in this country, even with insurance! We still do not know how much money this will all cost, for she is still in the ICU and we have no way of knowing how all this will affect her long-term. Robin will soon need to move from a “hospital” to what is known as a “Long Term Acute Care” (“LTAC”) facility. There are LTACs in Metro Atlanta, Augusta and Greenville, SC. We aren’t yet sure exactly which facility she will go to, or exactly when, but, it is looking as if it will be traveling in “weeks” instead of “months” as we were originally told. What we do know is that we need her to be closer to home so we can all help her get well. The medical transport alone will be in the thousands.
Please help with what you can. Robin and Mark worked their whole life, Mark served his country honorably, they should not have to be saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in medical debt for an unfortunate accident.
Thank you, and keep the prayers coming!
