When Chris Swaine was 20 years old he was diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy and Focal Segmental Glomerulo Sclerosis (FSGS) which are both Kidney Diseases.
In January 2020 Chris’ kidneys started to fail as a result of his diagnosis and he commenced dialysis 3 times a week.
Chris is now on dialysis 6 1/2 years and his heart is only functioning at 50%. The longer Chris is on dialysis the more complications he faces with his health. Chris is currently awaiting dates for two additional surgeries but most pressing is his need for a kidney transplant.
Chris was put on the kidney transplant list in October 2025 but unfortunately was removed from the list in March this year due to requiring dental work. Dental clearance is required for all patients on a transplant list to reduce the risk of complications and infection post transplant. The cost of the dental work is significant which is unaffordable to Chris given he can’t work due to his health issues which have him attending hospital 4 days each week. All this travelling and attending hospital appointments has not only had a huge mental health impact but has also been a significant financial impact on Chris.
Chris is a valued community member involved in many music projects in Carlow and Athy. Despite his own hardship, Chris has selflessly given his time to mentor many of the young artists in Athy and is co director of the Athy Gospel Choir.
Chris has participated in many fundraisers and hosted benefit nights for many over the years. Up until now Chris has never asked for any help himself so we as his group of friends would like to help him get back on the transplant list by fundraising for his required dental work.
If you can help even a small bit, every little helps. Thank you so much!
