Thanks for visiting this page.
As you likely know, Mike Walasek sadly passed on May 22, 2021 in Kamloops, BC due to mental health challenges that he was facing. By all accounts, Mike had been struggling for quite some time leading up to his eventual passing but had recently found a glimmer of hope through a new job, new friends, and a wonderful new place to live. Unfortunately, it came too late, as we all know now.
Mike is remembered for his many positive attributes: funny, kind, caring, empathetic, and in general: a good friend, an ally to those who need one, and a great person to be around.
Mike’s extended family has set up this GoFundMe page to help bring him home and when the time is right (and COVID restrictions are eased), to give him a proper send off with his friends, family, and everyone who cared about him in life. All funds raised will be given to Mike’s immediate family to use for the costs of his trip home and to his final resting place.
Should we exceed the costs of what the trip home, burial, send off, and any other associated costs with helping Mike get to his final resting place, Mike’s immediate family has indicated that they would donate any additional funds raised to two causes that were close to Mike’s heart:
· Canadian Mental Health Association, and/or
· St. Mary Catholic High School (where he attended high school) as a scholarship in Mike’s name to be given to students attending the Ambulance Communications Officer course, the same one that Mike attended.
Statistics from the CAMH:
In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. Mental health does not discriminate based on age, education, income, or culture. By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have – or have had – a mental illness. About 4000 Canadians per year die by suicide – an average of almost 11 suicides per day. More than 75% of these involve men. The stigma surrounding mental health remains a huge barrier to those affected by mental health issues.
Thank you for donating to bring Mike home.
