Rediscovering and bringing back to life a 'multimedia' play from the 18th century? This is what we set out to do with our project Tragedie Cristiane (Christian Tragedies).

Rediscovering and bringing back to life a 'multimedia' play from the 18th century? This is what we set out to do with our project Tragedie Cristiane (Christian Tragedies).

We are the musicians and researchers of Stile Galante, a Dutch-Italian cultural reality whose goal is to rediscover forgotten but important musical masterpieces of the past.

Duke Annibale Marchese's Christian Tragedies, published in 1729 in a very luxurious edition, were the fruit of an idea that united tragedy, politics, music, philosophical-religious convictions, and imagery into a single tangible item.

Artists and intellectuals involved in the preparation of this unicum of European culture included, in addition to duke Annibale Marchese (a renowned man of letters), the philosopher Giovanbattista Vico, painters such as Francesco De Mura and Francesco Solimena, and - above all - "ten of the best composers" chosen by the duke himself: Tommaso Carapella, Domenico Natale Sarro, Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Durante, Johann Adolf Hasse, Francesco Nicola Fago, Leonardo Leo, Nicola Porpora, Francesco Mancini, and Giacomo Francesco Milano.

This extraordinary dramatic collection (born between Naples and Vienna) gained great admiration, but has never been the subject of a systematic study equal to the one we wish to propose. Our work is planned on tree different tracks:

1) The production of a volume of about 600 pages, in English, with the participation of 27 leading Italian scholars in the fields of eighteenth-century theater, religiosity, material culture, painting and music;

2) The creation of a box set containing 3 CDs, with the first performance in modern times of all the music, entrusted to an internationally renowned vocal cast;

3) Public lectures, performances, etc. to raise awareness of this little-visited literary treasure.

To carry out point 2 of the project (the recording of CDs with the original music written for the tragedies) we are still lacking funds, which, once raised, will be used to cover technical expenses such as airline flights and train travel for the musicians and personnel involved, editing, etc.

The recording took place Jan. 6-16, 2025 with the following vocal cast:

The project involves performing and recording over 60 individual pieces of music that we feel it is important to resurrect from oblivion.

This is for us a very expensive project, but we want to make it real because it represents a big step toward the popularization of our research (which has been ongoing for more than a decade now). Our hope is that, once realized, the CDs will allow the non-professional audience to enjoy all the dimensions of the Tragedie Cristiane, starting with the musical one.

A nice way, for us, to contribute to the revaluation of our complex past with an the revival of a cultural product that still has much to tell us about our history.

Een 'multimediaal' toneelstuk uit de 18e eeuw herontdekken en opnieuw tot leven brengen? Dat is wat we wilden doen met ons project Tragedie Cristiane (Christelijke tragedies).

Wij zijn de musici en onderzoekers van Stile Galante, een Nederlands-Italiaanse culturele realiteit met als doel vergeten maar belangrijke muzikale meesterwerken uit het verleden te herontdekken.

De Christelijke Tragedies van Hertog Annibale Marchese, gepubliceerd in 1729 in een zeer luxueuze editie, waren de vrucht van een idee dat tragedie, politiek, muziek, filosofisch-religieuze overtuigingen en beeldtaal verenigde in één tastbaar item.

Kunstenaars en intellectuelen die betrokken waren bij de voorbereiding van dit unicum van de Europese cultuur waren, naast hertog Annibale Marchese (een gerenommeerd schrijver), de filosoof Giovanbattista Vico, schilders als Francesco De Mura en Francesco Solimena, en - bovenal - "tien van de beste componisten" gekozen door de hertog zelf: Tommaso Carapella, Domenico Natale Sarro, Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Durante, Johann Adolf Hasse, Francesco Nicola Fago, Leonardo Leo, Nicola Porpora, Francesco Mancini en Giacomo Francesco Milano.

Deze buitengewone dramatische verzameling (geboren tussen Napels en Wenen) oogstte grote bewondering, maar is nooit het onderwerp geweest van een systematische studie zoals wij die willen voorstellen. Ons werk is gepland op drie verschillende sporen:

1) De productie van een boek van ongeveer 500 pagina's, in het Engels, met medewerking van 27 vooraanstaande Italiaanse wetenschappers op het gebied van achttiende-eeuws theater, religiositeit, materiële cultuur, schilderkunst en muziek;

2) De creatie van een boxset met 3 cd's, met de eerste uitvoering in moderne tijden van alle muziek, toevertrouwd aan een internationaal gerenommeerde vocale cast;

3) Openbare lezingen, voorstellingen en studiedagen om meer bekendheid te geven aan deze weinig bezochte literaire schat.

Om punt 2 van het project uit te voeren (de opname van CD's met de originele muziek die voor de tragedies geschreven werd) ontbreekt het ons nog aan fondsen, die, zodra ze verzameld zijn, gebruikt zullen worden om technische kosten te dekken zoals vluchten en treinreizen voor de muzikanten en het betrokken personeel, editing, enz.

De opname zal plaatsvinden van 6 tot 16 januari 2025 met de volgende bezetting:

Het project omvat het uitvoeren en opnemen van meer dan 60 afzonderlijke muziekstukken waarvan we vinden dat ze aan de vergetelheid moeten worden ontrukt.

Dit is voor ons een erg kostbaar project, maar we willen het graag realiseren omdat het een grote stap is in de popularisering van ons onderzoek (dat nu al meer dan tien jaar loopt). Onze hoop is dat de cd's, eenmaal gerealiseerd, het niet-professionele publiek zullen laten genieten van alle dimensies van de Tragedie Cristiane, te beginnen met de muzikale.

Voor ons een mooie manier om bij te dragen aan de herwaardering van ons complexe verleden met de heropleving van een cultureel product dat ons nog steeds veel te vertellen heeft over onze geschiedenis.

Riscoprire e riportare in vita uno spettacolo ‘multimediale’ del 18simo secolo? Questo è quello che ci siamo messi in testa con il progetto Tragedie Cristiane.

Siamo i musicisti e ricercatori di Stile Galante una realtà culturale italo-olandese che ha per obbiettivo la riscoperta di capolavori musicali del passato, dimenticati ma importanti per la cultura europea.

Le Tragedie Cristiane del duca Annibale Marchese pubblicate nel 1729 in una lussuosissima edizione, sono il frutto di una idea che univa tragedia, politica, musica, convinzioni filosofico-religiose, e immagini in un unico oggetto.

Tra le figure coinvolte nella preparazione di questo unicum della cultura europea, oltre allo stesso Annibale Marchese (letterato di fama), il filosofo Giovanbattista Vico, pittori quali Francesco De Mura e Francesco Solimena, e soprattutto “dieci tra i migliori compositori” scelti dal duca: Tommaso Carapella, Domenico Natale Sarro, Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Durante, Johann Adolf Hasse, Francesco Nicola Fago, Leonardo Leo, Nicola Porpora, Francesco Mancini, Giacomo Francesco Milano.

Questa straordinaria raccolta drammatica (nata tra Napoli e Vienna) ottenne grande ammirazione, ma non è mai stata oggetto di uno studio sistematico pari a quello che vogliamo proporre. Il nostro lavoro si articola su tre diversi binari:

1) La realizzazione di un volume di circa 500 pagine, in lingua inglese, cui partecipano 27 tra i maggiori studiosi italiani nell’ambito del teatro, della religiosità, della cultura materiale, della pittura e della musica settecentesche;

2) La realizzazione di un cofanetto contenente 3 CD, con la prima esecuzione in epoca moderna di tutte le musiche, affidato ad un cast vocale di fama internazionale;

3) Incontri divulgativi, spettacoli e giornate di studi per far conoscere questo poco frequentato tesoro letterario.

Per realizzare il punto 2 del progetto (la registrazione dei CD con le musiche originali scritte per le tragedie) ci mancano ancora fondi che, una volta raccolti, verranno utilizzati per coprire spese tecniche quali voli aerei e viaggi in treno per i musicisti e il personale coinvolto, il montaggio, ecc.

La registrazione si svolgerà dal 6 al 16 gennaio 2025 con il seguente cast vocale:

Si tratta di eseguire e registrare oltre 60 singoli pezzi di musica che riteniamo importante far risorgere dall’oblio.

È questo un progetto molto dispendioso per noi, data la complessità dell’operazione, ma sentiamo come importante portarlo avanti perché rappresenta un ulteriore grande passo nella divulgazione delle nostre ricerche (in corso ormai da più di un decennio): la nostra speranza è che una volta realizzato, il CD consenta al pubblico dei non professionisti di godere di tutte le dimensioni delle Tragedie Cristiane, a partire proprio da quella musicale. Un modo piacevole per sostenere la rivalutazione di una complessa opera del passato che ancora ha molto da dirci sulla nostra storia.
