Earlier this week, my brother and I (Suleika Jaoaud) noticed something was off with our sweet LouLou, who was found as a stray with a litter of puppies in Tennessee and who we rescued from an animal shelter earlier this summer. She wasn’t eating, she was sleeping more than usual and appeared to have a fever. We took her to the vet who gave her antibiotics and some IV hydration, then sent her home. A few days later, she woke up shivering and began bumping into objects around the apartment. It became apparent that she’d lost sight in one or both eyes, and that her condition was rapidly deteriorating. We immediately brought her back to the vet, who told us to bring her to the emergency animal hospital.
After many tests, we’ve learned that LouLou has a potentially fatal fungal infection called blastomycosis. She is in critical condition and is currently receiving oxygen and round-the-clock care. The vet tells us the next 72 hours will be critical and that if she survives, she will require a multi-week course of treatment, and potentially, an operation to remove her eye. We are heartbroken. We are scared. We are cautiously hopeful.
The veterinary staff call us twice a day with updates on her condition—and updates on the mounting bills. It’s been three days and the bills have already topped $8,000. We’ve emptied our savings account, but on an elementary school teacher’s salary, continued care is becoming prohibitive. We love her so much and we want to do everything in our power to help Lou pull through, and to make it through this next week. Though we rescued Lou, she has done most of the rescuing and has become a beloved member of our family. She is the sweetest, gentlest dog we’ve ever had the privilege of loving.
