Hola Friends and Family,

Thank you for visiting my Go Fund Me page. I am currently a master’s candidate at the University of San Francisco (USF) in the Migration Studies Program.  With only one semester left to finally pursue my degree I need your help more than ever!!

So, here’s an update of my 2019,

On January 22, 2019 I arrived in Mexico City excited and ready to make the best out of my study abroad semester at Universidad Iberoamericana (Ibero). It was great to study migration in a new academic environment. Listening and having debates about migration with my peers from Ibero gave me a new perspective about migration. Ibero professors and my peers provided me with the theoretical tools to comprehend and analyze migration in an academic setting.

Over the spring and summer, I volunteered at a migrant shelter in Mexico City for a total of eight months. I provided support to the only teacher at the shelter by helping with infants and k-1st grade children waiting to get asylum in Mexico or simply to catch a goodnight rest before continuing their journey to the United States. In addition, I worked with teenagers and adults by providing workshops on the asylum process in the United States and on human rights. I also met many other organizations that work with migrants, including Poch@ House and Deportados Unidos en Lucha, who work with returned migrants, and people who have been deported from the United States. Volunteering at the shelter and meeting migration advocates in Mexico City, kept me grounded and gave me the hope and strength to continue humanizing migration despite the current global rhetoric.

Upon returning to the United States, I was assaulted, my laptop with much of my research was robbed. I am now left with a big bill to cover the cost of my new laptop, and with a remaining tuition balance to pay my last semester of graduate school. I am currently working tirelessly as an immigration paralegal at USF's immigration deportation law clinic but it is still not enough. I need your help covering my last semester. In exchange for your help, I am more than happy to meet you for coffee to talk about my experience or attend any event where people need to hear and understand that migration is a natural phenomenon. This degree is not only for me, but is also a dream to my parents, and dedicated to the millions of people who are being displaced and forced out of their homes due to violence, political persecution, climate change and many other reasons. I appreciate your support.

Con Cariño,

Vanessa
