Everyone who's met Mafe Rodriguez can tell you that she is a genuine, compassionate, and generous human being. Mafe has been there for all of us when we needed her, and now it's our turn to help her!
Mafe dreamed of biking her way around Asia for many years and had worked incredibly hard to save enough money to spend 6 months traveling. Even at the beginning of her trip, her budget was going to be stretched by camping, couch surfing, and finding odd jobs wherever she could.
And then COVID-19 hit.
On March 23rd, India locked down its boarders and Mafe's bike trip came to a sobering stop. Since then, she's been living in a hostel with other tourists and trying to make the best out of a bad situation.
However, the hostel Mafe had been staying at closed down, which is forcing her and her traveling companion to continue biking, looking for a new place to stay. To make matters more complicated, there is a heat wave AND locusts swarming the area she's in now. Her plan is to bike to Delhi where there are places to stay. But to get out of the heat, they're going north of Jaipur, through the mountains, where it is cooler.
They are camping wherever they can find a place and hoping to stay in a hostel every four days to shower/sleep.
The Columbian government is trying to coordinate flights, but they are unable to send relief to citizens stranded in Asian countries at this time. It's estimated that Mafe will have to stay in India for at least 4 more months. Once a flight is available through the government, it will cost over $3,000.00 USD.
Mafe has had to dip into her savings, intended for for her commercial flight ticket home, for food, water, and her month at the hostel.
I'm asking you all to pitch in what you can! Times are hard for so many during this pandemic, so if you aren't able to contribute money at this time, there are still ways to help!
1) Of course, if you have extra money to spare, please donate any amount you are able--it all add's up!
Cell phone service for one month: $5.00
Water for one week: $10.00
Food for one week: $15.00
Safe housing for one month: $50.00
Government Flight home: $3,000.00
2) Know anyone in northern India, near Delhi? Connect them to Mafe if they're willing to offer a safe place to sleep/any assistance.
3)Do you know anything about the area between Jaipur and Delhi? Safe routes to take, good places to rest, etc? Please share!
4) Call, text, or send videos to Mafe to encourage her and keep her connected to her community.
Any information on where Mafe can stay/the Delhi area can be e-mailed to me: [email redacted] or sent to Mafe: [email redacted].
Please know that Mafe may not be able to charge her phone for days at a time so her response time could be delayed.
THANK YOU everyone! Please spread the word and share this link. Let's work together and help Mafe get home!
