Two months ago, Jim Ahrens heard that, as he put it, “they found a bit of the cancer.”
What they initially thought was a hernia turned out to be a two-tennis-ball-sized tumor in his abdomen. Lymphoma, specifically.
As horrifying as that discovery was, the doctors say that with 4 months of chemotherapy, he is going to be fine.
His attitude is incredible. So positive and thankful and strong. And he is very impressed with the care and treatment he is receiving up there in Hanover and Owen Sound.
Since his diagnosis, he has been unable to work at his grounds keeping job at the local golf course, (something he has been doing, and loving, for the past several years), nor will he be able to work for the duration of his treatment, which basically goes to the end of the season.
He has also been unable to play trumpet with the “Bugle Boys” at Woodbine race track, something that he has been doing for the past 25 years.
Then there is the winter to make it through. Because he hasn’t been able to work, he will not be eligible for unemployment benefits and there is no other work up there in the winter.
Pike Lake, the golf course he works at, has promised him his job back come spring 2019, so that’s great. They love him there.
This puts him in a sticky financial situation, to say the least. Bills continue to pile up, there is wood to buy for the wood stove, property taxes, food, utilities, insurance, the grind of life.
Anything anyone can contribute to help Jimmy make it through to next spring would be hugely appreciated.
