Helplessness – “the feeling or state of being unable to do anything to help yourself or anyone else”. That’s how I am feeling right now.
My sister, Denise, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. She underwent a double mastectomy and radiation. It was far from easy, but she survived. If only it was that simple.
Six years later, she found another lump. Metastatic breast cancer. Chemo, radiation, and multiple surgeries followed. Since she previously had radiation, it was challenging for the doctors to develop a plan. She had radiation twice a day for 6 weeks. We lived in the Hope Lodge in Cleveland. We both cherish the time we had together.
The treatment came with a huge price - not only monetarily, but on her body. She continues to take chemo pills and deals with complications too numerous to describe. Because of the radiation, her implants from the reconstruction surgery had to be removed and like everything to this point, it was not routine.
Earlier this month, Denise had her implants surgically removed. As a result of that surgery, she is now in the hospital with a severe life-threatening infection. She had emergency surgery on Thanksgiving night, antibiotics, and will stay in the hospital for the unknown future.
Throughout this whole experience, Denise has met every challenge, without missing a beat in caring for her family. Denise has worked throughout this entire experience, but I can only imagine how they are struggling.
As if that’s not enough – we are in the middle of a pandemic. I realize there are a lot of things we can’t do, but unable to be with my sister, at a time she needs me the most, is the worst. In an effort to combat my feeling of "helplessness", I am reaching out to anyone who knows Denise and her wonderful family. Let’s show Denise some love, support, and caring. Please donate a small amount if you can. If you can’t – please just PRAY.
With love and thanks,
Renee
