Let's Get Molly Back on the Slopes!

There’s a saying from my home state of North Dakota,  “For the strength of the Herd is the Bison. And the strength of the Bison is the Herd.”

Our dear family friend, Molly Mabie, is facing a serious cancer challenge.  I’m asking you to join the Herd to strengthen her for this fight.

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MOLLY:

From the very beginning, when Molly came into this world 39 years ago with a birth defect that gave her short arms and fewer fingers than normal, her parents, Pat and Sid, encouraged her to do as much for herself as possible, despite the disability.  This has proved to be a winning strategy, as Molly has amazed and inspired all those around her with her determination, optimism, joy for life …and her wicked sense of self-deprecating humor!  Her disability was challenging enough for a child, but things got more complicated due to a heart defect, also present from birth. At age 14 Molly suffered a cardiac arrest at an out of town baseball game. Her guardian angels (paramedics Mike, Ted, and Jack) were nearby and saved her life. Over time it was determined that Molly required a heart transplant.  In 2001, one day after her 21st birthday, Molly was blessed to receive a new heart in an Oklahoma City hospital.

Despite her significant health challenges, Molly has created a wonderful life for herself and has a positive impact on all she meets. She moved from Kansas to Colorado several years ago, where she has developed an amazing group of friends. And thanks to an Adaptive Sports Program, Molly inspires all who see her skiing down the Colorado mountains!  But Molly’s ski season got interrupted a few weeks ago when she ended up in the emergency room with a perforated bowel caused by a cancerous mass. The diagnosis:  lymphoma, caused by the anti-rejection medications Molly has had to take since her heart transplant.

THE CURRENT CHALLENGE:

It would be enough to go through the chemotherapy required to treat the lymphoma, but Molly’s treatments are much more complicated because of her delicate heart situation. She will be receiving the chemo treatments back in Oklahoma City, so she can be monitored by the heart transplant specialists, who have monitored her health since 2001.  In her usual, indomitable style, Molly's response to this latest health challenge: “Let’s get this show on the road and kick this cancer!”

Molly’s parents are themselves an inspiration. Even though Molly’s health has always been precarious, they have focused on living in the moment with her, rather than dwelling on what might happen someday.   Some years back Pat and Sid were both laid off from their long-held careers and forced into early retirement, so the financial challenges of Molly’s care at this time are significant.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? JOIN MOLLY’S HERD!

Molly is facing six rounds of chemo; one every 3 weeks … if all goes well with her blood counts. She and her parents will need to stay in OKC for at least a week after each treatment so her heart doctors can closely monitor the effects of the chemo. The funds raised from this Go Fund Me will be used to pay for medical expenses not covered by insurance, for transportation to and from OKC and lodging costs for the minimum of six weeks they will need to stay in OKC during treatments.

Please consider joining Molly’s Herd to strengthen Molly for her fight against cancer …and help get her back on the slopes!
