Hello All,
The reason for this account is because my sister and her family are going through a tough time. My sister was diagnosed about 8 months ago with Chiari Malformation Type 1. Which the brain is protruding out of the back of the skull where the spinal cord passes through, this is causing her severe pain, which we had thought for years was just severe migraines. Migraines run in the family, so for us this was normal and was taken care of with some Tylenol. As Kristy started experiencing uncontrolled pain, unable to sleep, and trouble swallowing – we realized there was something more serious going on. After seeing several different physicians. We found answers, answers we did not want to hear. Kristy will indeed need surgery, which is scheduled for July 10th. The surgery entails removing the bone at the back of the skull and spine. The dura overlying the tonsils is opened and a patch is sewn to expand the space. This will release the stress and pain she is having at the back of her head. This surgery is about a 3 to 4-hour procedure with a 4-6-week recovery, depending on how the surgery goes. Kristy’s husband, Brock, a Police Officer has been by her side at every single doctor’s appointment, ER visit, sleepless nights and countless hours of support to help her cope with this surgery. With the amount of time Brock has been away from work to step up and take on both roles as mom and dad while Kristy focuses on her health along with him being an amazing support system for her and their family, he has drained his Paid Time off and Sick time at work. Regardless of this issue, Brock is still going to be by her side until Kristy heals and on her way to recovery. On one occasion, I overheard Kristy say “I don’t need this surgery right now. We can’t afford for Brock to be out of work with no pay. I can wait on this” This broke my heart into pieces. As some of you may know Kristy extremely well, you know Kristy will put everyone and everything before herself. She is an amazing mama to her two kiddo’s – Trey (11 years old) and Tylir (2 Years Old). Also, an amazing wife, sister and daughter. Sitting as an outsider witnessing my sister suffering with pain and anxiety of not being able to make it through this tough time financially and putting her own health issues on the back-burner made me realize I needed to do something and get her through this! With Brock being away from work on unpaid FMLA during this surgery and recovery time, there will be no income coming in. I wanted to put something together for us to come together to make this a stress-free journey for the Adams’ family! Anything is appreciated.. please keep Kristy in your prayers during this time.
