About one month ago, Kenzie was spending a dream day skiing at Squaw Valley with her brother and friends. Smiles so wide, 60 days of skiing under her belt by mid-February - a skier girls dream, feeling strong, she leaped off a cliff she had hit before and landed just slightly wrong leaving her with a broken Tibia Plateau, Fibula, and torn meniscus. After being rushed to the hospital in Truckee she required immediate surgery to repair her shattered bones with 16 screws and a metal plate. This recovery time is projected to be about 10 weeks of non-weight bearing activity, and then 6 weeks of intensive physical therapy.
She was sent home a few days after surgery to recover with her loving family. It was after two weeks of being home something wasn’t right. Her body was struggling to heal. Another trip to the emergency room in Truckee left her and her family with terrifying news that she was in acute renal failure from an undetermined cause. She was transferred immediately to a kidney specialist in Reno where she underwent countless blood tests, ultrasounds, a kidney biopsy, a round of hemodialysis and six plasmapheresis treatments. After several days more in the hospital, waiting and hoping for an answer she was finally diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. HUS is an autoimmune disease that has rarely been found in healthy, athletic young people like Kenzie. Her recovery will require months of more blood transfers, ongoing injections of Soliris (an extremely expensive medication targeted strictly for this disease) and monitoring at UC Davis to get her kidneys, circulatory system and immune system working properly again. On the positive side, Kenzie’s kidneys are almost back to normal and the doctors say all of these symptoms can go away after multiple infusions and continuing to lead a healthy lifestyle. Her prognosis is a positive one but it will require her, and all of us, to bust out all of that strength and love we possess to help get her and her family through this.
For those who don’t know Kenzie, she is a strong, loving, spirited, kind, and a compassionate woman, daughter, sister, mentor and friend. Kenzie is one of those people that effortlessly lights up a room, that will be there in sickness and in health, and is filled with passion, joy and love. She has had a constant stream of visitors and support these last few weeks in the hospital, which has helped strengthen her spirits. It also shows just how loved she is in her community. Her road to recovery will be and has been bumpy; it is filled with fear, uncertainties, patience and hope. Let’s return her love and help Kenzie heal.
We have started this GoFundMe page as a place to support Kenz over these next few months of recovery. Insurance bills alone will be frightening, along with the enormous cost of her life saving medication, but little things like gas money to go to Davis once a week, and meals in between, will help relieve the stresses allowing her to focus on her recovery.
A dollar a day will go a long way…
Gas Money
Rent
Daily life expenses
Medical bills/insurance
Physical Therapy
Kenz should be back on her feet in 12 weeks and we all know, she will be pushing to get back to work as soon as possible!
We love you, Kenz
