I have a brave friend who needs our help. She has been tolerating a controlling, abusive marriage while she works on her education, thinking that she needed to be better situation financially before leaving the marriage. She has been paying all of her family's expenses and taking care of the home and family while going to college, while her husband does nothing.
However, recently the violence has escalated, and she needs to get out before things get worse.
She is afraid that the younger children would be traumatized by living in a shelter, so she really wants to move into a small place of their own, whether an apartment, a basement, or a couple of rooms in someone else's house.
What's stopping her from moving out right now is that all the places she has found to move into require first and last month's rent, deposit, etc. While she has been managing to pay the bills, she has not been able to save for a deposit.
I know that having access to a small fund to get her started would give her a lot of strength and encouragement as she begins this very difficult road. Later on she may need furniture and legal aid as well, but right now she just needs a place to land with her children.
Average rent in Spokane is about $1000 per month, so I'm trying to raise two month's of rent plus some extra for security/damage deposit and for groceries and utilities to get them started. Update: I found out about some other financial needs that she has so I've raised the target enough to cover that and give her a little margin.
My friend is working with the YWCA to move out in the safest way possible, hopefully in the next few days.
This woman has already overcome great odds to come out of a very dysfunctional family of origin. She is an amazing mom, friend, and teacher, and I know she has so much to give the world. I would love to give more information about her amazing story but until she is safe, it's more important to protect her anonymity.
Right now she just needs a hand up. Nobody can do this on their own. Please give if you are able.
