Let's Get a Home for Grandma Julia!

I (Emily) am setting up this GoFundMe page for my dear friend Julia Dinsmore. Julia has spent her life using her voice and her labor to help others. She is an author, poet, singer-songwriter, and poverty abolitionist. Best known for her poem, “My Name is Not Those People,” Julia uses her creative voice to talk about things many of us ignore – class and poverty in America. I am attempting to raise funds for Julia to help her get housing close enough to her grandchildren that they can, as her granddaughter said, "walk on the grass to visit her." It might seem that a global pandemic, a record high unemployment rate, protests and civil unrest (that began in Julia's home city), and uncertainty for the foreseeable future is a crazy time to launch a fundraiser. But Julia has been working on this goal for over 4 years.

It is time.

It is time for Julia to have reliable, safe, stable housing for herself and her grandchildren because of the global pandemic, the record high unemployment rate, the protests and civil unrest (that began in Julia's home city), and the uncertainty for the foreseeable future. Housing is a basic human need and Julia has been creating housing for other people her whole life. She has loved on her city and on her state. Let's all return the favor and support this Social Justice Prophet be able to secure her and her grandchildren's stability and help to facilitate more of her story-telling. The world needs the books she will write once she is settled into her new house after this campaign.

All funds raised via GoFundMe will go directly towards the goal of getting Julia housing. The funds raised will be put into the Julia Dinsmore Benefit trust to secure housing for Julia. Monies in this trust can only be used for the purchase and maintenance of a house. After Julia's death, the monies and assets will be allocated towards the care of her grandchildren. Money that exceeds our goal will be used to stabilize Julia's life- paying down debt, purchasing reliable transportation, etc- and supporting Yo Mamas House.
