Let's Fund Top Surgery For TR!

TR Nunley is an incredible human being and a dynamic community leader. Take one look at the Wilmington Pride Facebook page (which he created, built to more than 3,000 members and administers) and you see he is smart, kind and generous. He asks and answers questions that concern the LGBTQIA community, makes referrals, and connects people with resources, social groups, entertainment and political actions.
Off Facebook, TR is genuine and caring to his friends and the LGBTQIA community. Just about anywhere you go with him you’ll find that TR knows someone there, and with most of them he has a history. Many know TR for the work he has done in the LGBTQ community, especially the trans community. He runs support groups, mobilizes resources, hosts fundraisers, and gives freely of his time to those who need his help. Not only does he spend a lot of his time, he ends up funding many of these projects out of pocket. And he has a full time job! TR’s incredibly humble, though, and will probably try to get us to edit all these nice things out of this description.
TR has a difficult time asking for help, so a group of friends and community members have banded together to fundraise on his behalf. Now is time the for us to come together to help TR. He needs top surgery. For the past five years, TR has been pursuing the surgery. Currently he wears a binder, which is a garment that flattens his chest. While a binder helps with gender dysphoria, it is not a lifelong solution. The surgery will allow him to feel more comfortable as he navigates the world.
TR has found a surgeon in Raleigh who respects him and has a lot of experience in this kind of surgery. Dr Keelee MacPhee will be doing this procedure.
But TR’s health insurance won’t pay for top surgery on a transgender man even though it is a medically necessary procedure. This is unacceptable because he pays a large premium and has a comprehensive healthcare plan, so excluding trans health from coverage is discrimination.
Let’s raise the money to pay for TR’s top surgery, which will happen Oct 2nd, 2019

It’s unjust that TR’s insurance will not cover the top surgery because he’s a trans man. But that shouldn’t stop it from happening. We are going to raise the funds to cover TR’s out-of-pocket expenses. He also needs financial support to cover the costs of out-of-town travel, medications, and post-op appointments.
We are confident that, as a community, we can lift TR up and make this surgery happen.
Contributions great and small are needed and welcomed. Please give what you can and spread the word to your friends and family.
Thank you for taking the opportunity to give a little to TR who has done so much for his friends and community.
