Jake's Story:
Jake is a brave young man. He lives with his parents and brother in Paradise CA. Back in the fall of 2018 a fire destroyed nearly 11,000 homes in Paradise and their home was lost. They were able to acquire a trailer, generator and large tent for "temporary" living which is where they spend most of their time. The power company has admitted liability for the fire and has settled for $13.5 billion, some of which will be used for rebuilding homes. As of 3/20 only 48 homes have been rebuilt and theirs is still on that wait list.
To make matters more challenging, Jake came down with respiratory flu symptoms on February 10, 2020. He was hospitalized and diagnosed with pneumonia and bacterial infections. He soon slid into a coma. By 2/12, Jake's organs were shutting down and the doctors were not optimistic that he would survive and even if he did, it would not be without debilitating brain trauma/cognitive issues. To make matters even worse, his feet had developed severe circulation issues.
Many people were committed to praying over Jake and his family during this period of time and we saw God's hand at work in so many ways through the weekly updates. On 2/16 - Jake was fully awake and on the phone with his parents - a COMPLETE MIRACLE! His organs were all functioning and he sounded like himself on the phone, yet his circulation problems continued in his feet.
Over the course of the next several weeks, Jake's progress became very inconsistent. The doctors were monitoring the circulation in his feet constantly as it would improve and then fail. Their concern was gangrene and they knew that amputation may be the only option.
Unfortunately he contracted a MRSA infection on March 19th that created an urgent need to amputate his feet because that infection would only worsen and take over the body. The next day the amputation was successfully completed and the infection was abated. However, it left Jake facing a host of very painful realities.
Enter in COVID-19! Because this virus was already in full swing throughout the States, Jake's recovery from surgery posed a unique challenge as well. Not wanting him to be in the hospital for risk of another virus, the hospital discharged him sooner than they may otherwise have done. Because of the family's living situation, this now poses some difficult challenges for him and for his family and those caring for him. They are not set up for this situation and will struggle to provide the right environment for Jake to function and thrive as he awaits his rehab process.
The family is in dire need of making some improvements to their surroundings; for example - creating an outdoor shower setup and building temporary surfaces that will accommodate his wheelchair mobility (the ground is quite soft in the tent and all around their property). The financial impact of losing their home was devastating and leaves them feeling far from equipped to support Jake on a daily basis.
Let's bless this family and walk alongside them so Jake can feel that love and support and encouragement as he faces a very new journey - one that he never imagined. We know that any help would make all the difference in the world to them! God has great plans for Jake and we can't wait to see what He has in store!
