The most important event and victory of the colonial era is the defeat of a well armed European force by our ancestors at the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. This is the battle that shook the world and awakened the cry for freedom and liberty around the globe. But, this important historical landmark has somehow sadly been allowed to fade from the memory of the world and saddly from successive generations of our own people so that many in the younger generation do not even know about the great battle.
However, for the last few years a group of young and brave men and women have been revisiting the routes taken by our victorious forefathers and walking the walk in the exact footsteps of our 150,000 citizens who marched north to face and then defeat the Italian army in less than half a day. This group known as Guzo Adwa, has been rekindling the memory of that famous war by allowing young Ethiopians to re-enact the voyage of our ancestors starting from Addis and walking on foot all the way to Adwa and reaching their destination on March 1 or each year they have travelled.
Guzo Adwa is a cause we must all support and allow to grow as a means of uniting us as a people behind our history at a time with a lot of uncertanties. This is neither a political, religious or ethnic issue. Our ancestors travelled to their destination irrespective of any of these devicive issues of our day. We should once agin rekindle our unity by standing together and supporting Guzo Adwa by showing our support and ensuring it's continuity by donating whatever we can afford in solidarity with those who will undertake this journey on our behalf.
Ethiopia shall live forever and ever!
