In a moment, everything changed for the Lam family. After a couple of days of feeling under the weather, Larry abruptly became disoriented, leading to a harrowing 911 call. Declining quickly, Larry was admitted to the ICU, sedated and intubated while the doctors worked to figure out why this healthy, 38-year-old young man was so ill. After a long night of grueling tests, it was determined that Larry had bacterial meningitis - a very serious and life-threatening infection of the membranes that protect the spinal cord and brain. This was a shocking development for the Lam family. Joyce, Larry’s wife, dedicated herself to dividing her time between being at Larry’s bedside, and caring for their three young children, ages 5, 3, and 1. Thankfully, Larry’s parents immediately left their home in Northern California to come and support their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Larry spent the next 26 nights in the hospital, and subsequently, at an in-patient rehabilitation center, receiving around-the-clock medical treatment for his severe infection and the related trauma his body sustained. During this time, Larry had to overcome severe pain, speech problems, heart irregularities, and weakness, paralysis, and spasms in his lower body. With a lot of hard work and support from his medical team and loving wife, Larry was finally released to return home. With the help of friends and family, Joyce reconfigured their home to make it wheelchair and walker accessible. Now, Larry has committed himself to a rigorous daily therapy schedule, as he works to regain his gross motor skills during this critical recovery time. Although thrilled to be home, Larry has a long recovery ahead. Joyce’s friends have started a fundraiser to raise money for the Lam family’s medical bills, lost wages, and ongoing health-related costs.
