Leslie Citron's Care
Donation protected
I am Ann Citron, Leslie Citron’s sister. Leslie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease about 2 years ago. This disease has taken from her the memories and abilities that we all take for granted will always be there. It is a disease called “The Long Goodbye” and it is harder than anyone can imagine. Doing simple things like dialing a phone, showering, and buttoning a shirt have become impossible. The ability to do the things she loved, like write, create art, or read, has slowly been taken away from her. This is the reality of what it means to lose your memory; to forget who you and your loved ones are.
When she was first diagnosed, I was only sending her groceries because shopping became difficult for her. I realized quickly that she needed more than that and eventually I was able to secure a wonderful person to come in part time. Part time had to expand quickly as Leslie (normally a person who loved living alone in the apartment she loved) did not recognize that she was in her own home, nor was it safe for her to be alone.
I eventually knew she needed around the clock care and we moved her to a facility in Westchester. This was at the end of January 2021 and during the pandemic. We could not visit. I also felt it was not the right place for her (for many reasons) and in March 2021, I moved her upstate to my town of Rosendale, NY, 5 minutes from me. She knows who I am and who her nieces are and I thought she could still have a life seeing us more regularly. She has a lovely room in a small house with 5 other people who also need more personalized care. The family who runs the house live there as well (with a nurse on premises) and are kind and loving. She is treated gently and with respect. This is what I hope for Leslie; patience and kindness. She is allowed to have her cat, Bob, with her and he is a great comfort.
This house is a private facility and I need help financially to keep Leslie there. Please know that there are many costs associated with Leslie’s care, and if there is anything at all that you could contribute to helping Leslie stay there, we would be grateful. Also know, that if Leslie were to pass away before this money is spent on her care, I will donate the remainder to the Alzheimer’s Association, and donate a small amount to this lovely home and the kind people who care for those who can no longer care for themselves.
Please feel free to email me with any questions
Thank you!
Ann
