Leroy vs Lymphoma

It’s been a year now since I’ve been diagnosed with T Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. We thank the Lord for his sustaining grace. We have exciting news that we have found a full-match bone marrow donor in the international registry.

After anointing prayer and the first round of chemo, I was free of lymphoma for 7 months. Then I caught Covid-19. My body's best response was to create lymphoma everywhere. After another round of chemo and a month’s stay in hospital, it was gone again. Two months later it is back and I’m back in chemo treatments.

The doctor says that I need a bone marrow transplant soon to survive because the lymphoma will become resistant to the few chemo drugs that work. We have found a perfect match donor. The only catch is that she is in the international registry in Germany, and we have to pay to get her stem cells collected and transported here to Taiwan. These will take over my own immunity in order to recognise and fight the lymphoma.

The success rate of the transplant is 50% higher if you can go into the program when you are in remission. My current treatment is putting me back in remission, so I should be ready for the transplant in one month. From what we have been told, the donor takes a month to get ready to give, so we have only a short time to raise the money.

Many of you have asked how you can help, and we have said we are fine until now. The estimated total cost is around $60,000 USD. This is such a huge amount the doctor thought it was impossible. The donor is available now, so we put down $1,500 USD to start the process. The next payment due is $23,000 USD to collect the stem cells. After that there is a variable cost for the medic to fly to pick them up, get the clearances needed to transport them here without airport scans that would kill the cells, and get them back here alive. This will be at least $30,000 USD.

The medical care here in Taiwan is excellent, and we have healthcare coverage for most expenses. There are no wait times for anything, and my doctor, Jia-Hau Liu, is a lymphoma specialist trained at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the USA. I am very thankful for a good doctor.

All chemo treatments and hospital stays have been covered by health insurance. They would have covered a bone marrow transplant if we could have found a local donor, but even though a great many kind-hearted people responded to get tested, we couldn’t find a close enough match. Fortunately, we have found this match in the international registry. So now we are headed to social media to ask for your help.

We are grateful for the New Life International SDA Church and Taiwan Conference leadership pulling together for us.
