We need YOUR help to SAVE LEROY!

Leroy is a shelter kitten who would’ve been euthanized because he has the calici virus. Calici can be contagious to other cats but not always so it’s a crapshoot on whether or not you decide to save cats with calici or let them go.

We received a request to help Leroy and his sister Chyna by their foster mom who was working as a foster with the shelter. They gave her an ultimatum that she either find a rescue to help them, or leave them at the shelter for euthanasia. That’s a VERY tough choice to make when you have poured your heart and soul into caring for these precious souls.

Here is the dilemma, Leroy has developed wet FIP and that is a deadly disease. If not treated immediately, he will die within weeks or months. Here is a little more about FIP and why it’s so urgent.

WHAT IS FIP?

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a disease that kills 1 in 100 to 1 in 300 of all cats under ages 3-5. The incidence can be five to 10 times greater among young cats coming from catteries and shelters. FIP is virtually 100% fatal, and there is no treatment or cure. FIP can manifest suddenly — weeks, months or even years after initial infection. Therefore, cat lovers usually experience the heartbreak of this disease long after they have developed strong emotional bonds with their pets.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is caused by a mutated feline enteric coronavirus (FeCV). This coronavirus is very common and typically harmless among kitties, especially those from shelters or catteries, as the virus lives in the digestive tract and is spread through feces. Most of the time this coronavirus is completely harmless, and the cat will eventually resolve the infection, though some will shed the virus intermittently but go on to live otherwise normal, healthy lives. In a small percentage of cats, however, this virus will mutate into FIPV.

Luckily we have rescue friends who have put us in touch with an amazing group of individuals fighting for a cure.

Dr. Neils Pedersen from UC Davis is the leading researcher on the disease. This is a very recent post on his site about his stance on the situation with the drugs. SOCK FIP | FIP Research Project | Companion Animal Health | Davis, CA

Dr. Pederson has made a breakthrough with the disease treatment but the drugs needed are not approved in the US yet. People are using them and CURING their cats of this disease but it’s extremely expensive and we have to act FAST. WE need your help to save Leroy‘s life. PLEASE, ANYTHING you can give will make a difference for this sweet baby boy❤️
