Le’Rea’s Journey to RN,BSN

I am a 29 year old, single mother of 3 beautiful children. I have recently been admitted into Samuel Merritt University in Oakland,Ca in pursuit of my Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  I am extremely proud of my accomplishments however, I’ve made this fundraiser because the cost of my tuition. It is about 80,000 for the 2 year program.

Before you skip pass this fundraiser please take a moment to read a little about me.

I had my eldest daughter at the age of 16. I was going into my senior year of high school. I can’t begin to explain the feeling of being a child and raising a child but my mom was a prime example of what resilience looked like so it didn’t take me long to adjust. With the help of my mother, I went on to finish high school and received my AS in pharmacology.  I went on to work as a pharmacy technician and I can say I’ve worked my ass off. Just to feel like I wasn’t fufilling my life’s purpose.

At this point, my eldest daughter was getting older and I would explain to her how important education is but I had to look in the mirror and ask was I actually being an example. You can tell your kids what they need to do but I realized that I needed to show not only her my other children. I stopped working full time,  I re-enrolled in school four months after giving birth to my youngest child. Words cannot explain how that experience left me in a state of nirvana, with a greater overall sense of direction, and the goal of becoming a nurse at the forefront of my mind.

During the time, I have taken every class and every assignment to heart surpassing the expectations of each assignment.Through all of this, I still balance part-time work, supporting my family as an active mother while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The academic accomplishments that I am currently the proudest of are becoming a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and being the recipient of the 2018 ASMMA scholarship. I am the all state awardee of Meritt College and I am also Math, Science, and English tutor at Merritt College. I find an abundance of joy connecting with students and helping them gain insight on a subject or on life in general. I look forward to continuing my education in nursing. After receiving my BSN, I will obtain my MSN in hopes of one day returning to College as an educator and opening a community clinic in underserved communities.

Even though my path has been challenging, without my life experiences, I may not have had the opportunity to grow as a person and develop the skills and compassion that I have. Without observing the quiet strength and determination of my mother, I might have given up when faced with obstacles of my own and not excelled in spite of challenges. Without having my first child at sixteen I may have not had empathy to care of someone outside of myself. I’m saying all of this to say, I believe my life happened the way it happened for this purpose. These experiences have allowed me to thoroughly develop myself along with many qualities essential for nursing and for me to be able to display this on a daily basis would be fulfilling of my purpose; making a difference not only to me but to every life I am able to touch.
