I had not met Leo´s family before until I had heard about his story through a mutual friend.
As I have a young daughter of my own, Leo´s story really pulled at my heart strings and I decided that I wanted to do something to help the family at this difficult time.
Leo the lion is certainly the bravest kid I know. He has battled cancer for many months and is going through hell and back, and he still keeps fighting and smiling!
Last September he had a very aggressive cancerous tumour in his head measuring about 9cm, this was successfully removed but then he developed septecaemia which attacked his liver and lungs causing Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the doctors told Leo´s parents that he would die in hours.
The tumour was diasgnosed as benign and as a Teratoma so no follow up treatment was required.
Seven weeks after the first operation the hospital did another MRI scan in order to discharge Leo, however in that short time frame another 5.5cm tumour had already grown.
Leo´s family were living in Spain at the time and the doctors in Spain had basically given up on Leo and would not perform another operation. His parents searched on the internet for the best hospital for Leo to save his life.
Two days later they flew to Liverpool to go to Alder Hey Childrens Hospital.
It was a miracle the second tumour was removed by a top neurosurgeon. The tumour was diagnosed as a sPNET, a very very rare and agressive cancerous brain tumour. The doctors also recognized that Leo had a stroke in Spain hence his severe weakness on his right hand side.
Leo now has to undergo very intensive chemotherapy for a few months and pray that this monster in his head does not grow again.
After the chemotherapy Leo will need a lot of rehabilitation to enable him to walk and talk again, Leo´s parents do not yet know the extent of the brain damage caused by the pressure of the tumours.
Myself and team mates at Valhalla Inline hockey club have decided we would like to do something for little Leo and his family.
We are planning to beat the current world record for the longest hockey game ever played (27h). This event will be in March.
Leo is an inspiration to us all, he has never showed any signs of giving up and continues smiling everyday.
The whole family need as much help as possible as they have also had to give up their jobs and move away from their home to save their sons life.
It is times like this we all need to pull together.
An angressive cancerous brain tumour could really happen to anyone. I personally could not comprehend what his parents are going through.
We need to raise as much money as possible for Leo, to help in his recovery.
He currently has reduced vision, weakness on his right side due to also suffering from a stroke, and he will need a speech therapist as he has lost it after the first operation.
His parents have had to relocate to Liverpool to be closer to the hospital so if we can take just a little strain off it would be amazing.
