Leo’s journey with gastroschisis

Donation protected
hi! I am Leo’s nan suella. This can get get quite long, sorry in advance. This little boy has been though so much already. Rachel and Roger found out their beautiful baby had gastroschsis at the 12 week scan. (A simple definition would be that this is when the bowel develops outside of the baby's body in the amniotic fluid)
Rachel and roger had to go to Canberra 4.5 hours away from their home once a month for check ups and monthly ultrasounds with specialist to ensure all was going smoothly, every ultrasound would show that the babies bowel was getting quite dilated and he was on the smaller side, otherwise all positive. At 20 weeks, found out we were getting a grandson! shortly after, Rachel had a massive bleed, and lost a lot of blood. after this they had to go to, Canberra for fortnightly appointments, which soon turned to weekly appointments. They were meeting with the neonatal drs and surgeons. At 35 weeks the drs were happy with how long the baby had stayed in the womb, (babies tend to be quite premature with this condition). The drs and surgeons had booked in to have a c section at 37 weeks. Rachel and roger were happy they could prepare more and organise the other kids smoothly to ensure they are okay and content with what was going to happen. How ever .... Days after the last appointment Rachels waters broke unexpectedly, She was flown to Canberra that night Rachel and roger were in Canberra for three days and She had another bleed which led her to the operating theatre for an emergency c section to deliver their baby boy He had arrived His tiny. Leo was rushed of to be operated on immediately after, After theatre He was in is incubator covered in cords you could barely see him, he was content, healing & perfect! Little Leo James the strongest and most brave little boy!! and then the real journey began... Two days after Leo was born and just after they were able to stabilise his bowel and get the bowl inside the silo he had a perforationn (a bust in the bowel) as well as an infection which led him to another emergency surgery at 10pm at night, He came out of surgery and the surgeons sat Rachel and roger down and said to expect the worse as this was a difficult operation and they were not able to get all of his bowel back inside his tummy Leo was strong he fought through he showed them how brave is really is. Leo also was not able to have any milk. He is on TPN AND LIPIDS which is nutrition given to him through a drip although because he will be on these fluids for months they insert a central line which is a long line drip inserted into the main vain near the heart. Leo went for his third operation a few weeks later, to put all of his bowel back inside, again told to expect the worse and that they may not be able to close it as the hole in his belly is really large! He was on a high volume of morphine which meant a breathing machine providing high flow which was so high it shook his whole body for three days before they were able to turn the machine down. They had to monitor him closely to ensue he did not get compartment syndrome (a condition caused by organs getting squished from to much pressure which stops them from working) Again 48 hours later Leo come out of that stronger than ever. Until he ended up with a staph infection in his central line, Leo went for bone, brain, heart, xrays and ultrasounds on his abdomen and neck so see where the staph infection was coming from, and also found a blood clot on his main vain near his heart. So Leo is now awaiting his fourth surgery to close his stoma, on antibiotics has been now for 6 weeks his jaundice levels are high, he is on TPN fluids although not keeping any of the good vitamins in so also needs a top up of vitamins A,D,K and E as well as B12 and sodium as well as blood thinners Rachel and roger had a meeting with the gastro dr who explained they are looking at keeping Leo in hospital for another 6 months Rachel and Roger do not like asking for help so I have created this fundraiser as my way to help them with everything they are going through at the moment. If you are not able to donate just send Rachel, roger and Leo positive prayers. Leo is a fighter he has got this!!!!! Love to all!
