I can hardly believe it's been almost a whole year now. May 23rd 2016 everything changed in our family. Our father Leon was starting the long drive back to Edinburgh from visiting his mum in Kent. That journey changed his life in more ways than it's possible for anyone apart from him to really comprehend.

The accident left him with a serious spinal injury and he was completely unable to move or even speak.
Losing all independence so suddenly is something Father has been coming to terms with over the last 12 months. It's been a hard journey but his unwavering optimism and attitude about everything that's been thrown at him has been unbelievably inspiring to witness and has helped the people that love him cope a little easier.

In recent months he has regained his voice, which was a huge milestone and testament to the Queen Elizabeth Spinal Unit's care. I still remember hearing him talk for the first time after 4 months of silence. It was completely amazing.

He has now begun using some voice recognition technology, which has improved his quality of life considerably. He is able to switch lights on and off, play music and radio as well as change TV channels. Things we all take for granted but these seemingly small daily tasks have given him a little independence back.

So many of Father's friends have asked how they can help. As everyone that knows him knows, he's an artist and a keen golfer so I ideally wanted to participate in an event he'd be interested in but unfortunately I have never played golf. So, I entered the Edinburgh Marathon. I am going to run and my brother Luke is running too. We are going to use the money we raise to enhance his environment even further now, such as exploring voice controlled options which will enable him to interact online and communicate more easily by phone and text, keeping him more in touch with friends and family.

We want to be able to use as much of the practical knowledge we have been learning to help the rehabilitation process for other people with spinal injuries and their families too, by sharing information through online blogs and the family communities associated with the National Spinal Centre in Glasgow.

The race is on 28th May, almost a year to the day since the accident, we would be so happy to see some supporters on the day and incredibly grateful for any contribution.

If you know my father, Leon Moodley, and you would like to help in any other way, please drop in and visit him in Edinburgh. He loves seeing friends and loves having a laugh.

The postman for King's College Hospital in London remarked that Father was the most popular patient he had ever known, due to the huge volume of cards from people around the world that flooded the critical care ward in that first month! In the midst of everything, that was hugely comforting.
