HELP SAVE THIS FAMILY
The Veru family fled Colombia in 2014. Fearing for their family’s safety, they left their south American home with their children. It was long road that led them to Fort Erie, Ontario. In August 2017, Leoni and Magda thought they had finally found a safe haven in Canada. With little to no money or possessions and fearing for their lives, the family applied for refugee status. It was denied. Trying another route, they applied under humanitarian and compassionate grounds. Again, the application was turned down. While waiting for their applications, they worked to live and pay legal fees.
In February this year, CBSA made the decision to deport this tax-paying family – sending them back to the country they fled. Now, fearing for their lives again with no money, this family has to purchase one-way tickets back to Colombia.
The only thing this hard-working family wants is to remain and work in Canada. For those of us who know the family, we want them to stay as well. Letters of support from members of the church, co-workers, and friends testify to the decency of this family who embodies what it means to be Canadian. Yet, Canada has turned its back.
We need at least $30,000 to help support a campaign to keep this family safe. From airline tickets to legal fees to the cost of lifestyle disruption – the money will be used over the coming months to support their bid to be Canadian.
Our country needs more people like the Veru family. Please show you care by making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign. There is an urgency as the first step in the deportation process happens later this month (April).
We know we cannot save everyone. But, we can help the Veru family. Thank you for your support.
