Leon was diagnosed with colon cancer in December and had surgery at MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) on Feb. 24. All went well for a week...until the surgery site had a "leak" and it created a wild infection that spread rapidly and he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and treated for Septic Shock.

A second surgery was done to "wash out" the infection." But, the infection affected his brain and he now has encephalopathy, which simply put, is an "altered mental status" and he is unable to communicate.

Pneumonia set in and the focus was changed from healing the infection to managing the pneumonia. After 24 days in the ICU of our local hospital, he was transferred again to MUSC where more advanced care is available.

Because this is 100 miles from home, extra expenses have arisen in order for the family to stay around the clock with him. (Even in the ICU, he still needs one of us with him at all times.) Hotel bills, gas for travel back and forth from Myrtle Beach to Charleston, and eating out more than usual have all become a strain on finances.

Also, Jeanne, his wife, has not been able to work as usual.

We are told this is not a sprint, but a marathon; in other words, this is going to take time. No one can say how long, but his family is dedicated 100% to caring for him and bringing him home as soon as possible.
