My experience so far at Western Illinois University

Hey everyone,

I started my studies at the Western Illinois University on 21st August 2023. It has been a great experience. I’m currently talking three classes: Physics, Organic Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis (Chemistry).

I’m learning lots of new things which will help me become a forensic scientist. So far in Chemistry the focus has been on acids and bases and functional groups. In physics we studied vectors and the motion of one- and two-dimensional objects.

It’s been really interesting so far. I’m having fun, meeting new people and doing my best to be successful.

The 2023 Grenadian students contingent finally together in USA

Update June 2023

Hello Everyone!

I have some exciting news! We did it!

Thanks to your contributions, I will be attending in person the last year of my Forensic Chemistry course at Western Illinois University.

I need to continue with GoFundMe because part of the sum I received was a loan that I promised to repay. But I wanted you to know this good news right away.

Here is what happened: To meet the May 30th deadline to get the visa for the USA, family members and friends managed at the last moment to put together the additional sum needed to satisfy WIU admission requirements. With the donations and loans received, my GoFundMe goal is now reduced to USD 11,500 (CHF 10,500), which means that only an additional USD 5,000 (CHF 4,500) is needed.

I’m on my way to reaching my dream of making my scientific contribution to my small island country Grenada in so many useful ways.

A hearty Thank You, I wouldn’t have made it this far without your help.

Please Help This Brilliant Student to become the First Female Scientist available in Carriacou, Grenada Grenadines, West Indies.

Ms. Lené Mitchell, 21, has passed with full marks her first 2 years of online study in Forensic Science at Western Illinois University, USA.

To complete her degree and reach her dream of becoming a Forensic Scientist, she needs to study one more year in person at Western Illinois University. Unfortunately, long-promised financial support for Lené suddenly did not materialize. Western Illinois University already forfeited 11,000 US$ from the sum required to complete the course, because of Lene's remarkable grades. But she still needs to raise 19,000 US$ to be accepted.

There is no Forensic Scientist in Carriacou island and when Lene` has her degree she will help, through DNA analysis & Trace Evidence, the following:

- the Police in their investigations

- pathologists

- historians

- archeologists

- anthropologists

- animal & tree biologists

- determining the history and the age of artifacts & burial grounds

In Lene`s words:

Science has been a field I’ve loved from a very tender age. Looking at my favorite cartoon show SID THE SCIENCE KID, helped me to observe the wonders of science and what it can do. As I grew my love for science didn’t change but I became fascinated in the field of forensic science. This fascination came about while laying on my couch in the evenings with my dad looking at ID (a criminal investigation show). I paid particular attention to details on how facts and scientific evidence are used to solve mysteries.

My favorite science subject is Chemistry from the time I started secondary school until now. My love for the subject grew since Chemistry is vital in forensic science. With chemistry, forensic scientists can paint a picture of what happened, sometimes on a molecular level. Chemical analysis can reveal many things such as how long ago a person died or the quality of the material used at a crime scene.

Many people may not see forensic science as an important field. However, this field is quite interesting since it uses scientific procedures, methods and technologies to investigate crimes and prove or disprove the guilt of an accused suspect in a court of law. Forensic Science can also be used to bring closure to grieving families who weren’t aware of the cause of death when their loved ones passed on.

Moreover, forensic science is not just one huge field; it is composed of many areas, which makes it extraordinary. There is DNA Analysis, Trace Evidence Analysis and Forensic Anthropology just to name a few.

I graduated from the T.A. Marryshow Community College in the area of natural science with honors. The majors I’ve undergone are Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. While attending college I have greatly improved my communication skills since half the job of forensic scientists is writing reports and giving testimony.

I have been accepted at Western Illinois University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in forensic chemistry. I’ve completed two years of attendance online. I am kindly asking for any assistance, which would make it possible for me to complete my studies. I can assure you that your assistance won’t be given in vain, but I would strive to achieve my life’s goal.

Vi chiediamo di aiutare questa bravissima studentessa a diventare la prima Scienziata Forense donna dell’isola di Carriacou (Isole Grenadine dei Caraibi).

Lenè Mitchell ha 21 anni e ha superato, a pieni voti, i primi due anni del corso online in Scienza Forense, della Western Illinois University, USA.

Per completare i suoi studi, ottenere il diploma e quindi realizzare il sogno di diventare una Scienziata Forense, deve frequentare obbligatoriamente l’ultimo anno di Università.

Grazie agli eccellenti voti ottenuti da Lenè, la Western Illinois University ha già annullato il costo (di 11,000 US$) relativo al corso dell’ultimo anno; ma, per essere accettata per il 2023, Lenè dovrà ancora mostrare di poter sostenere la spesa di 19,000 US$ per questo anno finale di studio negli Stati Uniti e purtroppo Lenè non è in possesso di questa somma.

Attualmente non ci sono Scienziati Forensi nell’isola di Carriacou: e quando Lenè otterrà il suo diploma potrà finalmente ottemperare ai seguenti campi di azione e studio:

- Analisi del DNA e tracce di prove processuali

- Investigazioni della polizia

- Studi di patologia

- Studi di storia

- Studi di archeologia

- Studi di antropologia

- Studi di biologia su alberi e animali

- Studi di storia di artefatti e fosse comuni

Fin dalla più tenera età ho sempre amato la scienza.

Il mio cartoon show preferito, SID, LO SCIENZIATO BAMBINO, mi ha aiutato ad osservare le meraviglie della scienza e a capire a che cosa può essere utile.

Crescendo, la mia passione per la scienza non è cambiata e ho cominciato ad essere affascinata dalla Scienza Forense.

Questa attrazione si è formata mentre guardavo ID, uno show sulle investigazioni criminali, la sera, seduta in poltrona accanto a mio padre.

Ho fatto particolare attenzione ai dettagli, e a come i fatti e le evidenze scientifiche aiutano a risolvere misteri.

Ad ora, il mio oggetto di studio preferito, fin dalla scuola secondaria, è Chimica.

La mia passione per la Chimica è cresciuta perché questo studio è essenziale per la Scienza Forense. Attraverso la Chimica, gli Scienziati Forensi possono ricostruire cosa è accaduto, a volte anche a livello molecolare.

L’analisi chimica può rivelare molte cose: ad esempio da quanto tempo una persona è morta o la qualità del materiale ritrovato in una scena del crimine.

Molte persone non considerano la Scienza Forense come un importante campo di studio; invece è molto interessante perché vengono usate procedure, metodi e tecnologie scientifiche per investigare crimini e provare, in tribunale, la colpa o l’innocenza di un accusato.

La Scienza Forense può anche essere usata per scoprire la causa di morte di una persona, fornendo ai familiari in lutto una valida spiegazione dell’accaduto.

La Scienza Forense non interessa un unico campo di studio, ma coinvolge molti e diversi aspetti (come l’analisi del DNA, la ricerca e la produzione di elementi di prove processuali, l’antropologia forense, per citarne solo alcuni) che la rendono davvero uno straordinario campo di studio e di ricerca.

Ho un diploma con lode conseguito al T.A. Marryshow Community College in Scienze Naturali, e una specializzazione in Biologia, Chimica e Matematica. Durante gli anni di college ho migliorato molto la mia comunicazione scritta e verbale, indispensabili per una Scienziata Forense che ha il dovere di testimoniare in corte e scrivere rapporti.

Sono stata accettata dalla Western Illinois University per ottenere il diploma in Chimica Forense.

Ho completato i due anni di corso online.

Ora, chiedo il vostro aiuto per poter completare i miei studi.

Posso rassicurarvi che il vostro sostegno non sarà vanificato, perché farò tutto il possibile per raggiungere il mio obbiettivo di vita, il mio sogno.
