For some time now Luke’s brain has been developing a large Pineal cyst/tumour (about 16mm) in the mid brain area. This cyst is pressing on vital structures and blocking the flow of cerebral spinal fluid. Since Pineal cysts are generally benign they will continue to grow and create increasing medical issues such as Hydrocephalus, Parinaud’s Syndrome, blindness, seizures and/ or black outs, dementia, difficulty walking and staying awake and much more.
Luke has been dealing with agonising, crushing headaches, amongst other symptoms, every day for over three years, which is very distressing.
In order to be able to live painfree, Luke needs vital brain surgery from neurosurgeon, Dr Charlie Teo at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. This is an extremely risky and specialised operation that only Dr. Teo can perform. The government unfortunately gives no support for those who suffer from this condition and the operation cannot happen until the money is paid.
Luke and his family are trying to cover as much of these costs as possible – through accessing superannuation, using savings and fundraising efforts, but the financial burden is high.
Luke wasn’t keen to set this fund up at first, but after some convincing from those around him, he has allowed family friends to start this campaign on his behalf. We really hope you can help.
All money raised will go directly to pay Dr Teo's fees ( his assistant surgeons and nurses) and the hospital fees (Prince of Wales, Private). Both of these fees are $50,000 each, which leads the overall cost for Luke's surgery to be $100,000 (plus flights etc.).
Luke needs all the love and support he can get to have the life back that a 23-year-old should have and then to live a long, happy and healthy life. He is currently working in his dream job at AJ Hackett, in Cairns, and is looking forward to life turning back to normal after the operation.
On behalf of Luke, Robyn, Paul and Rebecca, and all of those who love him, we thank you for taking the time to hear Luke’s story and for any support you may be able to give.
