Lending a Hand for Lori

THE CAUSE

During these uncertain times it's hard to imagine the struggle that many people are facing. We are all trying our best to social distance and protect ourselves from COVID-19. In these unfortunate times, we can't imagine life becoming anymore challenging. Being an essential retail worker, we try our best to protect ourselves and others. Many of us rely on the benefits we get from our place of work to help us survive.
Sadly one of my co-workers, Lori, was involved in a horrible accident on April 30th around 4:15 p.m. Lori was on her way back to work when a driver failed to stop at a two-way stop intersection on Peace Road and Freed. The collision was horrific. My co-workers car was totaled and she had to be extricated from her vehicle by first responders. Because of the impact of the crash, Lori suffered from severe injuries to both legs that will impact her ability to function normally. She was rushed to Northwestern (Kishwaukee) Hospital. On May 1st the decision was made that Lori needed to be transferred to the trauma unit at St. Anthony's Medical Hospital (OSF). Since her transfer, Lori has had 3 major surgeries to help fix her legs and additional surgeries are expected. Her next surgery will take place a week after her most recent surgery that took place on May 6th. Her partner of over 22 years, Deb, says that Lori's recovery will be long and uncertain.  The trauma surgeon mentioned that her injuries were the worst he has seen of these types of injures. The injuries she sustained are very serious and will require additional surgeries in the future. Even with all the surgeries Lori will still need more post-accident corrective surgeries for the rest of her life. Once Lori is released from the hospital, Lori will be admitted to a rehabilitation center for additional recovery support.
Due to COVID-19 Deb is unable to be by Lori's side through all this. The outcome of this accident has caused Lori and Deb to lose their only car. Thankfully their car insurance allows them to have a  car rental, but that is only a temporary solution. Their car insurance will only cover the rental car for a week. Any benefit that Lori may be receiving from  her work will only help for a short period of time. Many of Lori's co-workers wanted to help raise money to support Lori and Deb during this hard time. Because of Lori's kindness and welcoming personality we wanted to create this GoFundMe for everyone that knows or has interacted with her.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 because we want to make sure that Deb and Lori are cared for during this uncertain time. The money will help Deb with being able to afford the basic essentials/necessities and provide support with any bills that they will be facing.  Your donation  will support them while they wait for everything, in regards to the crash, to settle. Deb wants everyone to know that she and Lori are extremely grateful to be surrounded by so much love and support. If you are able to give a monetary donation, we are extremely thankful! If you are not able to donate, we ask that you keep Lori and Deb in your thoughts and prayers!

ABOUT LORI

Anyone that knows Lori will agree that she has the biggest heart of gold! Whether you are a close friend, a loved one, and even a co-worker, you have seen her kindness and compassion shine! Her personality is warm and energetic. Deb describes her partner as an extremely selfless person and will always put others' needs before her own.  If you've ever come into her place of work, you may have been greeted by her exuberant voice or hear her contagious laughter from across the store. You walk in expecting to be provided with the same kind of customer service you might get any where else. But with Lori, she is dedicated to making sure all the customers she interacts with are cared for and leave knowing that she has made a difference. Lori has made personal connections with her customers and cares for all her regulars that she gets to interact with on a daily basis. She has the effortless ability to brighten someones day with her humor and charm. Lori deserves all our support during this challenging time.

If you would like to send Lori cards, flowers and/or ballons, please contact me through GoFundMe! I will be providing updates that I am given by Deb, Lori's partner of over 22 years.
