Len Mitchell Technology Fund
Donation protected
In October 2020 our good friend, Len Mitchell, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and has been in the ICU of the University of Alberta Hospital since that time. Many of you will know Len from his long history of leadership among the Deaf community in Alberta and Manitoba and at the national level, as a former President of the Canadian Association of the Deaf. Len also served as a board member for the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) impacting Deaf communities around the globe.
Sadly, Len is gone from being able to use American Sign Language, to being completely paralyzed from the neck down in just a few weeks. We are working with a Deaf owned technology consulting company to identify technology that can be used to support Len's use of eye blinks and eye tracking on a computer keyboard and offer him a chance to communicate again with his family, friends, as well as the medical team working with him.
We are raising funds to cover the costs of the computer equipment and eye tracking camera equipment (none of this can be supplied by the hospital) and the Deaf consultant's time to teach Len how to use the technology. If there are sufficient funds, the remainder will go to other technology to support mobility and home care services during the long recovery.
The doctors anticipate that a full recovery may be possible, however that can take up to 18 months. Join us in giving back just a bit to someone who gave so much of his early career to serving others. We appreciate all your loving, positive thoughts and donations that will support communication access for Len.
