The Short Story
On September 1, 2017, 30 year old Lelia’s life, changed forever. By God’s grace, Lelia survived a serious fall from over 49 feet! She sustained mostly internal injuries, which included 11 broken ribs, pulverized T10 and T11, cracked L5, collapsed lung and internal bruising, her world suddenly narrowed to just getting her next breath.  In a short period of time, she went from a healthy youth camp leader to being a parapalegic. Lelia has spent the time since September in the hospital or in rehab. She has made huge strides forward.  

She can no longer walk, but Lelia can drive, she just needs a special wheelchair accessible van with hand controls. Her indomitable spirit and faith will do the rest!

​GOAL: We would like to raise $50,000 as soon as we can, so Lelia can regain  her independence!

 Workman’s Comp will pay for modifications to a van fitting her exact needs, Lelia must find, and pay for, the van which must fit certain specifications. It must be either a Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey or Dodge Caravan, and it cannot be older than three years. It must have less than 50,000 miles.

Neither Lelia, nor her missionary parents, are able to pay for this on their own. We know there are many people all over the world who would like to help Lelia, and so we have created this Go Fund Me page to help her gain more freedom by being able to drive herself.

Around 9am on September 1, 2017, Lelia Shoemaker’s life changed forever.  She lay flat on the ground, looking up at the place 49 1/2 feet above in the tree she had just been in.  She was excitedly doing something she’d done many times before, setting up a tree climbing course for a new crop of 6th grade girls looking for the kind of adventure Lailia is good at providing!​ ​

Amazingly, she had NO serious head injury which was nothing short of miraculous. Just the right folks to care for her arrived on scene quickly and she was helicoptered to a hospital where she went right into surgery. Over the next months, she would have more surgery, rehab, various therapies in three states, and have to start back at square one when new things were discovered. 

Lelia is a vibrant, funny and fun loving 30 year old woman.  She is the daughter of missionaries who lived in Africa. Her dad grew up in Bolivia, South America.  Lelia’s heart was to train for overseas missions herself, but many times over, she found the door not opening the way she had dreamed.  Through a college missions trip in the States, she realized that there was plenty to do right here in this country and through a series of events found herself stepping into the unchartered territory of camp ministry! 
​Being irresistably drawn to a challenge, she stepped into what would become her passion and something she was uniquely gifted for.
​She ministered to kids of all ages from youngsters to seniors in high school,and though she knew she couldn’t “fix” their heart aches, she could love them, be crazy fun with them and share her exuberant faith in Jesus.

She went on to obtain her BA in Biblical counseling, and she kept walking through open doors towards camp work. For the last four years she has been employed full time by Village Creek Bible Camp in Iowa.  During this time, she has been in leadership, counseling, lifeguarding and guiding kids through kayaking, challenge courses, archery, laser tag, building trust with, and encouraging them to tap into their own strengths, busting through self doubt, just as she herself modeled.

Lelia may not be able to walk anymore, but she has a full life ahead of her. Our desire is that she can gain more independence through having this wheelchair accessible van with hand controls so that she can keep living the life God has called her to.
