I am the club advisor for a brand-new club at my high school in its 2nd year up and running! The club is a student-led club that allows all teens the opportunity to learn and explore more about mental health topics in a safe and supportive environment. Club members will talk about mental health, and be allowed to normalize the conversation to eventually eliminate the stigma that is associated with mental illness at their school.
I'm raising money this year to create and purchase specialized club T-shirts that each student will be able to own and wear to represent being a member of the life-changing club. I will use the additional funds raised to purchase supplies that would be needed to complete posters and print flyers to post around my high school's campus to continue spreading awareness of mental illness and erasing stigma in the process!! Club funds will also be used to support school wide events (i.e. Health & Wellness Week, May Mental Health Month, StressLess Week during finals, etc.)
As a mental health provider at a public high school, I find that this club to become a passion of mine. I want to be a life long Mental Health Advocate and do my best to address Suicide Prevention at Leland High School! The goal and purpose of this club is to start the conversation and when I did last year I had 174 students show interest. Mental illness, according to research, impacts one in every four people. I hope to continue to do my part and continue to support and provide the necessary resources as a club advisor for a club that deals with mental illness and the stigma surrounding it!
