Leighton Hahn Recovery Fund
Family and Friends,
We’ve been doing our best to enjoy this vacation as much as possible, but in reality we’ve been holding our breath and quietly praying for many miracles over the last five days. It’s starting to feel like we can finally come up for air.
We were all at the beach on Saturday when a large wave crashed into Leighton and threw him against the shore. He was spotted face-down in the water and quickly removed by us boys. Doctors have told us we saved his life.
He was speaking at the time but had limited movement in his arms and almost no movement or sensation in his legs. He was rushed to the ER in Waimea where they quickly discovered fractures of the first five vertebrae in his neck. He was urgently flown to Honolulu where he had emergency neurosurgery to stabilize the fractures in his neck.
The surgery went well, but a few hours after surgery he went into respiratory distress and an emergency airway was placed in his neck. He now has a trach and is working toward breathing on his own again. He’s showing lots of improvement in movement of his arms and legs, too.
Once he’s more stable, the plan is to figure out how to get him closer to home to continue his rehab.
Our dad faces a long road to recovery and will need to be admitted to a rehab facility once back on the mainland. Doctors are confident he could regain up to 90% of his strength and sensation.
The funds raised will be used for a flight to bring Leighton home and to cover additional medical expenses.
Our whole family appreciates the thoughts, prayers, and donations.
