After 10 surgeries in 2020 as a result of complications of an ankle fusion I
became a double below-the-knee amputee at the age of 30.
Our out-of-pocket expenses after the surgeries, amputation and new prosthetics are over 8k and I am continuing with expenses related to the procedure.
I was recently taken by ambulance to Methodist hospital in Des Moines where I was treated for an infection behind my knee. The injury was caused by outdated and poor-fitting prosthetics. Our out-of-pocket costs for new prosthetics after insurance are around 3k-4k per prosthetic. This doesn't cover all the other expenses incurred during the hospital stay and recovery. I am back to being confined to a wheelchair at the current time and having to wear old prosthetics. This will continue to do damage to both legs. I enjoy being active in camping, hunting, and going racing and have hopes to be able to do that after my new prosthetics.
