Who are we?
We are the Legion of Learners (LOL), a First Lego League (FLL) robotics team hailing from Loudoun County, Virginia. Our team comprises of middle schoolers and high schoolers.
We have been invited to the FLL international robotics competition in Izmir, Turkey this May! We are stunned, excited, and overwhelmed!
What does that mean?
The First LEGO League is a trinary competition, meaning it has 3 aspects. It involves building and programming a LEGO robot to accomplish specific tasks on the field mat provided. Teams are also given a problem/issue to research and provide an innovative solution for. Teams must venture out and communicate with experts to share their results. The third aspect of the competition is the Core Values! Teams must exemplify FLL Core Values and display Gracious Professionalism at all times.
Our Journey so far:
Our robot’s name is Vince, short for invincible. This year’s theme was space and the problem our team chose was the effect of airborne dust particles on astronaut's health. These particles can cause severe health problems and in extreme cases, death. Our solution for this devastating problem is called Pure Breeze, an air purification system filtering out these harmful airborne dust particles. We contacted several experts including Michael Johansson from NASA on our solution to further improve Pure Breeze.
At our regional competition held in November, 2018, we were awarded Tournament Champions based on our success in the Lego robot challenge games, our great teamwork during our Core Values challenges, and our project design along with innovative solution. We then advanced to the States competition that was held in early December and competed against 40 teams from around VA/DC.
We performed in an outstanding manner all day! WE HAD A BLAST! We knew we had put in the work and we enjoyed the day! At the end of the tournament, we were rewarded for all of our efforts by winning the 2018 - 2019 second place Championship Award and have been invited to compete at an International competition at Izmir, Turkey in May, 2019!
Representing VA/DC:
Now, we are on a fundraising drive to get us there! Airfare, hotels, meals, transportation, banners, shipping, etc. are all going to be fairly expensive. We are a determined group though and have multiple fundraisers in the works!
How can you help?
We are seeking financial support for this amazing opportunity. Our team is aiming to raise $19,500 to cover all our expenses, including flights, accommodation, and competition registration, etc. and would greatly appreciate any financial assistance that you can provide. We are extremely grateful for all of the support we have received throughout this amazing season!
