My name is Charvon Putman, and I am a mother of three sons living with sickle cell disease. Many of you may have seen the viral video of my experience at Arizona General Hospital – Mesa, where a physician assistant referred to me as a "Dilaudid guppy." This comment was not only deeply hurtful, but it made me feel mocked and dismissed during a time when I needed care and compassion. Living with sickle cell disease means enduring unpredictable, intense pain that often requires strong medication, and I have repeatedly felt that my pain and concerns were minimized or overlooked by medical professionals. Instead of receiving the dignity and respect every patient deserves, I have faced suspicion and discouragement, which has made seeking emergency care even more difficult.
I am speaking out because sickle cell patients deserve better treatment and understanding. No one should feel afraid or ashamed to seek help during a medical emergency. Sharing my story is not just about my own experience, but about raising awareness and encouraging more compassionate care for everyone living with this disease. As a single mother, I am doing my best to advocate for myself and my children, but I do not have the resources to take appropriate legal action on my own. The funds raised will help me secure legal support and pursue justice, so that my voice—and the voices of others like me—can be heard.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me, believed in me, and encouraged me to keep speaking up. Your kindness means the world to me and my family. Anything helps, and I am grateful for every contribution. Thank you and God bless.
