Help Teacher Fight Discrimination, Eviction, & Housing Scam

Tracey is a lifelong public educator from Detroit who has spent over 25 years successfully teaching, mentoring, and fighting for her students in Detroit Public Schools. Now, she's fighting to rebuild her life after suffering from covid three times, two retailiatory evictions, and total disregard of her serious health challenges—all injustices within the span of a single year.

Why she's asking for Help:
In 2020, after contracting COVID-19, her health took a drastic turn. She developed more severe asthma, allergies, and now anxiety. Therefore, she continued teaching from home with ADA accommodations where she was safe. But, when she and the union reps raised concerns about serious DPS issues like lead in the water and outrageous class sizes (over 200 virtual elementary students!), they were evicted from the DPS Virtual School and forced back into physical classrooms—against all medical advice.

DPS claimed cutbacks, but her virtual position was filled with a new male teacher, new staff were hired, and she was left without a job, income, or legal support after decades of outstanding work and exposing lead, mold, and corruption.

On top of that, she caught covid again twice wearing a mask. Months later, her housing situation took a devastating turn. After four years of renting from a suburban landlord, she was retaliated against for simply requesting a smelly leak to be repaired. The same day the plumber finally came and gave an estimate, the landlord called and told her to move out. He gave her an option: let him move in with her or find a new place! When she refused, he followed through with a retaliatory eviction because they were on month to month payments and he never fixed the leak after years of asking.

To add to her unrelenting PTSD, while searching for a new home, she gave a holding deposit to another landlord in Detroit—only to be told the house didn’t pass inspection and he refused to return the $1,800 deposit, although he emailed that he would before she paid him. Tracey later discovered he was listed on the Sex Offender Registry for trafficking children!

Today, she has a new landlord, but the same old problems.

How Your Support Will Help Her Seek Justice:
