#KillTheBill Newcastle legal fund for protesters

On 1st May, people in Newcastle standing up to an unprecedented increase in police powers were met with unwarranted police aggression. Minors were arrested and held for over 10 hours for writing statements in chalk, which easily washes off. Protesters were picked off by police after sitting down to rest, and we witnessed levels of police brutality that many of us have never witnessed before at demonstrations in Newcastle.
At least 3 protesters were rugby tackled and pinned to the ground, sustaining injuries, cuts, and bruises as a result of this. Protesters were threatened with arrest, and in some cases, arrested for documenting arrests and supporting arrestees.
We believe that no one taking part in protests for social justice should face the system alone. If you do too, please donate.
Northumbria Police showed clear intent to crackdown on an entirely peaceful protest, although these were not the first arrests made as part of Kill the Bill demonstrations in Newcastle. Overall, there have been 17 charges/arrests made against peaceful protesters since the first demonstration at the end of March. We need to be able to stand up to these charges but for this, we need your help.
We are aiming to raise an initial £2500 with a stretch target of £5000 to support people following Kill the Bill protests in Newcastle.
The money raised from this fund will be used to support all defendants through the process of the justice system. Depending on need and priority, this money will be spent on providing legal support, covering travel to court appearances, and loss of earnings sustained as a result of attending court.
We do not anticipate there to be any left over money from this fund however if there is, it will be held and ring-fenced to support people in a similar way in the future.
