Up to 49 tenured, tenure-stream and professional track faculty at the University of North Carolina Greensboro are facing termination, demotion, teaching-only roles, drastic pay cuts, short-term contracts or conditional resignation letters.

Affected faculty members received verbal announcements of upcoming termination/reallocation on February 1st, 2024 following a deeply flawed and unprecedented Academic Portfolio Review (APR) process. The faculty facing job loss/restructuring are from departments and programs that Chancellor Frank Gilliam has decided to close following this review process. However, the need for program cuts and resource realignment lacks any clearly articulated evidence. Neither academic justifications nor budgetary numbers supporting these closures have been provided.

Moreover, the programs that are proposed to be cut were not identified as ‘at risk’ programs in the APR process. Instead, these programs were added at the last-minute, apparently on order of University administration. Faculty were completely surprised by these announcements.

The UNCG chapter of AAUP is raising money to secure legal representation for this community of affected faculty. In our reading of UNC system policies, we believe that the UNCG administration has violated several internal policies with these pending terminations and planned restructuring of positions.
