Two months ago I was given an orphaned baby badger, whose mother had been shot by a hunter. He brought the baby to me to raise, as I already have coyotes and a fair amount of knowledge about wild animals. His eyes were still closed when we got him, he had no chance of survival in the wild. We began bottle feeding him around the clock, and giving him the 24/7 care he needed. The first day I had him I went into the Department of Ag and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and was directed to Fish and Game. When I contacted Fish and Game, I was directed back to Fish and Wildlife but when I explained I had been sent to them they said theyed have an officer call me. On May 7th I spoke directly with an officer on the phone, and I told him I had a baby badger and was inquiring what I needed to do to keep it. He said he didn't know and would get back to me. I never heard from him or anyone else from the Fish and game after that phone call..... until two months later when they showed up to my house, confiscated the badger, and gave me a citation for keeping a furbearing animal in captivity. Despite explaining to them how I tried to get answers, they said "it's on me". I can understand why it's illegal, and really have no problem with that. But now I have to go to court and fight to keep my hunting license for something I tried my best to be as open and legal with as possible. I did my part and was ignored, and now my livilihood and greatest passion in life is jeapordized, simply for saving a baby animal. I was completely open and up front with everything, I truly feel like I don't deserve to be drastically punished when my intentions were ethically and morally right. Thanks to everyone for the support they've given me, I truly appreciate it.
