Justin Burrows, otherwise known as JB Politics on social media, is known for running a strategic voting website called SmartVoting.ca during the 2025 federal Canadian election, in which I was an NDP candidate for for the riding of Etobicoke Centre.

Justin Burrows has repeated several defamatory allegations against me to his hundreds of thousands of social media followers, saying that I doxxed him, revealed the names of his children during an Instagram Live, and endangered his children and disclosed personal information about his family.

Given that I’ve never held an Instagram Live, didn’t even know Justin had kids until he made these allegations so obviously never said his kids’ names, and never published nor possessed any private or identifying information about him or his family, Justin Burrows’ allegations against me are categorically false and publicly defamatory in nature. These false statements hurt my reputation, my credibility, and emotional well-being, which really sucks because I leverage all of those things for my activism. The work is never easy, being a queer racialized woman living with disabilities, and this incident really didn't help.

I’ll be the first to say that legal systems are far from perfect, and cost a LOT of money. I’m extremely privileged to have the resources and time to have started taking a legal route to hold this person accountable, and I’m doing so from a place of principle. Because there are endless people like Justin Burrows out there hurting people and their work the way he hurt me and mine and getting away with it.

Whatever amount of damages I’m awarded from this case, which will hopefully be in the tens of thousands, I want to put towards continuing my and others work in advocating and organizing towards a more principled, kind, and fair society, and I want the outcome to serve as a message of accountability and justice.
