Legacy Mobile Dialysis van for York Renal Unit

Donation protected
Great News! We have spoken further with the York Hospital teams and they are really excited to see this project succeed. Also, there is a wider scope to this than we first thought. We are now aiming with your help to take this cause national and will be contacting the national Kidney charities for their views and suggestions.
End stage Renal failure patients have little to no kidney function which leads to a build-up of excess fluid and toxins in the body. This is a lifelong illness which limits the scope and activities of everyday life. By using a Dialysis machine at least 3x a week it reduces their fluid and toxin levels however can leave them very tired and, in many cases, unable to support themselves in work.
Anyone in this situation would love the chance to go away on holiday with their families, taking the time to improve their mental state and that of their carers who are so easily forgotten.
Being able to go away for a weekend or a holiday in the UK is a simple task for many people, when you are dependant on Dialysis this can be a logistical nightmare. While there are static clinics across the country, some areas have little or no facilities.
This legacy is aiming to open up these opportunities and give patients the chance to get out and see anywhere in the UK they wish. Enabling them to get out and about.
Please help us to realise this dream and remember a dearly missed and generous man by supporting the health and wellbeing of people in similar situations around the country.

In remembrance of Ian Marshall, we would like to raise funds to purchase and refit a vehicle to hold a mobile dialysis unit and donate this to the York Renal Unit. This will then be available to patients through the Unit to take holidays and travel further afield while keeping up with dialysis treatments.
Since the sad passing of Ian, we would like to complete this dream as a legacy to him. Ian was a gentle man who would do anything for anyone. Ian started with kidney disease in his teenage years with his first transplant in 1984. In those days Ian had treatment within a home dialysis unit portacabin. All Ian wanted was to escape and get as far away from the Kidney machine as possible.
In 2005 Ian’s Kidney started to fail again and was back on dialysis by 2007. On this occasion Ian preferred to go to the York Renal unit three times a week. Each treatment is four hours and can take up to half a day. Even with the wonderful friendly team in the Renal Unit Ian still felt that he was tied to the machine. In 2011 Ian was lucky to receive another replacement Kidney, unfortunately this never reached its full potential.
In 2017 the replacement Kidney also failed, and Ian was back to dialysis again. Due to several conditions tied to the Renal failure Ian was never in a safe position to enter the transplant list.
Throughout Ian’s life he found it was very difficult to go on holiday due to requiring dialysis three times a week. To consider holidays a suitable location had to be found near a dialysis unit and confirm availability prior to booking. Sometimes confirmation didn’t happen until a week before the allotted holiday period. This can be a very stressful and complicated process that puts many people off trying.
This legacy will allow patients the freedom to travel further afield for holidays or offer a change of scenery to patients on home dialysis.
If we are unable to meet the target for this goal all funds will be donated to the York Renal Unit in the memory of Ian Marshall.
