Legacy Homeschool Academy Appreciates Your Support

Back in 2014, the Legacy Academy Homeschool enrichment program was created, starting with around 45 students. The program, at the time, was run out of a church, generous enough to share their space with our students. As the years went on and our program flourished, we started quickly outgrowing the space. With the homeschool community in this area also continuing to grow, we knew we needed another great space to occupy.

In the small, but growing town of Elizabeth, Colorado, there aren't too many spaces ready to take on 120 students. What was unknown to us was that there was a big building just off the main street, full of classrooms, full of potential, full of purpose, and at the time, vacant. During the initial tour, it was clear that this building had everything our program needed: bigger classrooms that would belong to our teachers, a cafeteria that would provide a great lunchtime gathering space, and a massive gym that just might be too big (not really), but it was inspiring to imagine this space as the educational home for our students.

With a district and maintenance team that moved mountains over the summer of 2023 to get us moved in, we finally had a space that would be able to grow with us. The building provided everything we could need and want, but one thing it also came with was its age.

The building opened in 1920 and was originally called the Red Brick School. In the years since, it has been added onto, with the most recent being the gymnasium in 1971. Recently, in 2020, it housed an alternative high school program but closed due to low enrollment numbers. The first bricks laid at this historic building are now over 100 years old and still counting.

Towards the end of this last school year, our program faced some challenges in the form of roof damage and leaking. To ensure student and staff safety, we were not in the building for a couple of weeks so the district could get information regarding the needed repairs. A great loss was felt while we were away. This building had, until this point, provided the most preferred place for us to come together each week, to build bonds of friendship, to laugh, to build, to create, to paint, to sing, to play, and to learn.

We were able to safely occupy the building to finish out our school year, but there is still work that needs to be done and repairs to be made so that we can continue to occupy this space.

In closing, we are creating this GoFundMe to reach out to the friends and families of our homeschool students in the hopes that we can help support the cost of the repairs for the historic building we occupy. With our sincerest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude, we thank you for supporting this cause.
