Leg Braces for Viriak

About Yvonne: Before I tell you about Viriak, I want to tell you about my friend Yvonne. If you know her, then you already know that she is a powerhouse of love and an amazing woman. She has been living in Cambodia for 10 years giving her life to help those in dire situations and serving and loving the people of Cambodia. During this time she began to see that there was not enough support for people for disabilities and she wanted to be that support! She created a project called Carrying Companions to bring hope, dignity and the love of God to people with disabilities and their families through education, creativity and most importantly companionship.
This is my friend Yvonne:)
About Viriak: Yvonne is the reason that I know about Viriak. He is an 18 year old Cambodian young man who became disabled when he had an unfortunate accident that caused injury to his spine when he was 2 years old. Since then he has not been able to walk or stand without the help of leg braces and a walker. Growing up with a disability is not easy, but it is especially difficult in Cambodia. It is incredible that he is where he is today! Viriak's mother died 6 years ago. This left his dad, who is a tuktuk (Cambodian taxi) driver alone to care for Viriak and his 4 siblings. When he was 8 years old Viriak stopped going to school because the other children bullied him by emptying trash cans out on top of him.
The Need: Viriak is currently interning at a wonderful partner organization to Carrying Companions and is growing in confidence and discovering what makes him come alive. Before Covid-19 there was an organization that provided him with braces and walkers. They have stopped offering this service. And it is time for him to have a new walker and braces. Yvonne and Carrying Companions has helped him to get a new walker!
He was very happy and appreciative! But...he still needs braces. The braces they would get him would be made in Cambodia with imported materials and custom fit for his needs. They will last a minimum of 5 years and have a lifetime warranty. Without help from others it is impossible for him to get these braces.
