Introducing The Esther’s Girl Empowerment Initiative (TEGEI)

The Esther’s Girl Empowerment Initiative (TEGEI) is a community-led nonprofit working to uplift vulnerable women and girls in rural Teso sub‑region, Uganda. TEGEI focuses on two core areas:

In many rural areas of Teso, girls frequently miss school due to lack of access to menstrual products and facilities, which contributes to high dropout rates. TEGEI addresses this by:

Distributing reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls, reducing financial barriers and helping them stay in school each month.

Conducting workshops to teach girls and caregivers how to make and maintain these reusable pads, empowering them with life skills and promoting self-reliance.

Similar initiatives in the region have shown positive results—others have trained over 10,000 girls and helped prevent dropouts associated with menstruation .

2. Skills Training for Young Single Mothers

TEGEI also supports young, single mothers by providing vocational training and resources to help them earn a sustainable income:

Training in tailoring, crafts, or small-scale production—often including reusable pad making.

Providing childcare support or daycare services so mothers can pursue training while knowing their children are safe.

Offering financial literacy, mentorship, and psychosocial support, helping mothers manage income, build confidence, and navigate life post-adolescence.

Similar programs in Uganda—like vocational training initiatives for single mothers and psycho-social support programs—have empowered many women to rebuild their lives economically and emotionally after early motherhood .

The Challenge

In Orungo, young single mothers face devastating setbacks: heavy rains and harsh weather repeatedly destroy outdoor learning structures, damage equipment, and disrupt vocational classes. Many mothers miss sessions caring for infants in unsafe spaces, leaving them unable to complete training and support their families.

Why Now

Without a durable classroom block, learning stalls during rainy seasons. Materials spoil, attendance drops, and hopes for economic progress fade. You can help change that.

Our Solution

We plan to build a strong, weather‑resistant classroom block equipped with sanitation facilities, shaded training areas, and secure storage for tools and equipment. This will serve as a permanent venue for vocational training—tailoring, agro‑processing, hairdressing—and life skills workshops.

Improved health and hygiene with proper facilities
