Everyone knows what a wonderful man, husband, father and friend, Lee is. Not everyone knows the day his life change forever.
It is with my heart in my hands that I am creating this GoFundMe page. This is not a place I ever thought our family would be in. The date that changed his life is August 28, 2020. This is the day my cousin Lee, his wife Laurie and their boys found out Lee had cancer. Her husband, their father, didn’t just have cancer, he had kidney, lung and brain cancer. As their time stood still in that moment, the diagnosis continued. Aggressive stage IV, metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma, intracranial metastatic cancer and malignant renal neoplasm. Numerous tumors in multiple lung lobes, his brain and kidneys.
I’m starting this fundraiser, because we fight and we fight hard. This is our way. He is our own and this family needs us and they need us now more than ever. I am asking for your help and support.
The physicians at Parkview Cancer Institute have recommended treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, with the use of the CyberKnife System. (The CyberKnife System was designed to deliver precision external-beam radiation therapy). Unfortunately, these treatments are not doing what they should for Lee. He needs more advanced treatment options. Laurie has been coordinating between Lee’s Parkview specialists and a team under MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. MD Anderson is the best cancer hospital in the United States. They offer integrated cancer treatments that include a higher prognosis rate. I have arranged for Lee to get transported by an an organization called Angel Flights. Angel Flights is nothing short of miraculous organization! Unlike, commercial flights that would expose Lee to countless illnesses, including Covid-19, Angel Flights will fly him and Laurie on a private plane from Fort Wayne, IN to Houston TX. They can continue to request repeated flights as many times as they need to Houston. This allows him access to any future treatments and specialist visits he may need. These flights are done by donations and are otherwise covered by the organization or the volunteer pilots themselves. Their boys will stay at home and try to maintain a small amount of normalcy. Part of this fundraiser is to help cover medical out of pocket expenses, travel expenses, including lodging, food, and transportation.
Cancer affects the whole family. Laurie’s live has changed in unimaginable ways. One thing that didn’t change was her continuing to work as a nurse in a hospital helping other families, while she is away from her own. She is an amazing mother to their incredible boys that still need her everyday and even more now. Laurie has managed all treatments, doctor visits, finances, updates, among many other tasks to make sure the love of her life, is getting the best support and treatment he can get. Supporting her family has become of the essence but without taking a breathe in the process. Part of this fundraiser is to help her take time off work, so she can focus solely on her and her family without the day to day stress of working away from her loved ones during this time.
