Lee Is (Finally) Getting Top Surgery!
Donation protected
Hey folks! I am Lee (or Pauli) and after 4 years of jumping through hoops and fighting for gender-affirming care, I am finally booked for my double mastectomy on January 4th 2023!! (edit: it was initially the 11th but due to a cancellation I was offered an earlier date). It's a long story, but briefly: it took so long because there are a lot of steps required to receive funding through OHIP, and after having multiple doctors drop the ball on me, I am FINALLY getting the surgery I have wanted for the better part of a decade.
While the top surgery itself is covered by OHIP, countouring is an extra fee charged by the surgeon of ¬$1850, due a week before the procedure (so the last week of December). This could not come at a worse time for me, as my parents, whom I live with, have just sold their house and we will be moving in the end of January. It's also a long story, but I've been underemployed since covid started, and completely unemployed since the end of August. My parents have graciously been covering my living expenses for month now (car insurance, medications, vet stuff, groceries, bills, and hundreds of dollars on dental care for me with thousands more upcoming). They will continue to support me until I find a job in our new town, a large burden on them occurring right when their available funding is tied up in the move and related repairs and renovations. They will also be directly supporting my recovery from surgery.
I very much appreciate their ongoing assistance but would like to be able to pay for the surgery, my expenses (¬$700) for the month of surgery recovery, and perhaps have some money to update my wardrobe given how little of my clothing fits me since starting HRT combined with my lack of income for years and the upcoming change to my body size/shape.
Despite my years of crappy financial situation, I am in only minimal personal debt beyond my car loan (held by my parents) so what little savings I had are long gone by now and I am barely getting by. If I were somehow to meet and surpass this goal, any additional funding would help support myself and ease the financial burden off my family while I relocate and find work in the coming months, and maybe pay for the absurd amount of dental work I need but have been avoiding due to cost. Fun fact: if I'd been able to get this surgery within a year of actually starting the process, I would have been able to afford to pay this all out of pocket, as I was still employed full-time.
Funding Will Cover:
- Surgical contouring fee ($1850)
- 1mo of living expenses ($700)
- Transportation to/from surgery in TO and potentially overnight accommodation if roads are bad ($25-$150)
- Gender-affirming clothing ($100)
- Name & Gender Marker Change/ID Replacement ($150+)
You'll notice the amounts, when totalled, are more than the funding goal because I'm trying to be realistic. I doubt I'll be able to fund this at all, given my degrading social network, but I would be very grateful for anything and everything you folks can help out with. Thank you so much in advance for sharing or donating!
